# Dog Steps vs a Ramp: What the Sources Without a Ramp to Sell Actually Say

Owners search for dog steps far more than ramps. Ramp makers say ramps win. The veterinary bodies that sell neither say either one — and all name the fix nobody searches for: footing the category itself fails at.

Owners overwhelmingly shop for steps. In a corpus of senior-dog mobility videos we transcribed ourselves, steps came up in 42 of 73 and ramps in 34, and the steps videos carried 2.6 times the audience; the most common mobility question typed to reach this site asks what the best steps are for a fifty-pound old dog. The pages telling you to buy a ramp instead are, almost without exception, published by companies that sell ramps. So we went and read the sources that sell neither — and found something more useful than a winner. They mostly decline to crown one. What every one of them names instead is the fix nobody is searching for: secure footing. Then we counted the critical reviews of the aisle's best-selling traction product, and found that the thing most often wrong with it is that it stops gripping.

## What we built, and what it can and cannot tell you

On 22 August 2026 we assembled a machine-readable corpus of what the senior-dog mobility conversation actually contains. We discovered a roster of 136 videos across 23 search queries, pulled transcripts for every one with a usable track, and discarded anything under 200 words as a junk caption file. Then we counted, with one rule that changes everything: **one video is one vote.** A creator who says "ramp" forty times in eleven minutes counts once, exactly like a creator who says it once. Without that rule the ranking measures how talkative someone is rather than how many people think a thing matters.

Here is the whole table. The counting is ours, and so are the percentages.

**Now the limits, because they matter as much as the counts.** This measures what creators publish, not what dogs need — a corpus of videos is a corpus of opinions with a camera. "Combined views" is a directional popularity proxy and nothing more: a single 200,000-view video swings a whole row, and at least one row here is swung exactly that way. We did not analyse comments — we pulled comments from two videos only, and no sentence on this page rests on them. And we quote no Amazon customer reviews, here or anywhere. The transcripts are the citable asset, and where we quote we quote verbatim and name the channel.

One number we will not dress up. Steps beat ramps by 42 videos to 34 — that is 1.24 times, not "twice as often." The wide gap is in audience, not in video count.

## The gap between what is searched for and what is sold

Two independent signals say owners are shopping for steps.

The corpus is the first. The second is our own traffic: across 44 distinct mobility-aid queries that brought readers here from Bing, the recurring shape is *steps* and *stairs* — "what are the best steps for a 50 lbs old dog," "helper for dogs on stairs for seniors," "stair traction for senior dogs."<Citation n={2} source="Dog Orthopedic first-party search data, Bing Webmaster Tools query report, read 22 August 2026 — 44 distinct mobility-aid queries; verbatim strings quoted here include 'what are the best steps for a 50 lbs old dog', 'helper for dogs on stairs for seniors' and 'stair traction for senior dogs'" url="https://www.dogorthopedic.com/tools/dog-steps-vs-ramp.md" /> Those are real strings typed by real people, and the top one describes a specific dog. Fifty pounds. Old.

Fifty pounds is a medium-to-large dog. Old, in the context of somebody searching at eleven at night for mobility equipment, usually means stiff. Hold that dog in your head, because everything below is about him.

## Who is telling you to buy a ramp

Search this question and the strongest, most confident answers come back from four sites. We read all four on 22 August 2026, and then we read their shops.

**DoggoRamps** publishes "Dog Stairs versus a Dog Ramp." Its verdict is that "a ramp is the only solution that is completely impact-free" and that "a dog ramp is the more versatile and safer option for your dog." DoggoRamps Inc. manufactures hardwood dog ramps. On the same day, its catalogue listed a small bed ramp at $325.00, a large one at $425.00 and a couch ramp at $225.00.<Citation n={3} source="DoggoRamps, “Dog Stairs versus a Dog Ramp - Here's What to Consider”, read 22 August 2026. **Doggie Ramps** writes that "a ramp is much easier for dogs of any age with muscle and joint issues to use than stairs." **PetStep** writes that "jumping up and down steps puts strain on your dog's joints and spine… A ramp provides a gentle slope that reduces impact and risk of injury." PetStep manufactures folding pet ramps and sells them direct at $135.96, with product copy claiming the ramp "helps prevent and reduce arthritis & dysplasia pain in pets."<Citation n={5} source="PetStep, “Best Dog Ramp for Stairs Outside: Safe and Easy Access for Your Pup”, 30 June 2025, read 22 August 2026. **Viva Essence Pet** publishes that ramps distribute "a dog's weight evenly across all four paws," making them "ideal for dogs with severe arthritis, hip dysplasia, or back problems." This one is a different animal: it is a retailer that sells both, listing a "Gentle Slope Pet Ramp" from $88.95 and "Orthopedic Dog Stairs for Joint Relief" from $83.95 on the same site. It is not partisan. **Not one of the four cites a named veterinarian or a study for its impact claim.** As you will see below, no canine study has ever measured impact on stairs, so there was nothing for them to cite.

We are not exempt from this and we will not pretend to be. We are an affiliate site. We earn a commission on ramps and on steps at the same rate, which is the only reason this article can be written — we have nothing to gain from the answer either way — but we do have something to gain from you buying *something*, and you should read the recommendations at the end with that in mind. ## What the sources with nothing in the aisle actually say

Here is what we found when we went to the veterinary bodies. It is not the clean "ramps win" that gets repeated, and the difference is the most useful thing on this page.

**VCA Animal Hospitals**, in its arthritis page authored by three veterinarians including a diplomate in pain management and sports medicine, lists among the things that help: "**Provide a ramp or stool/step for entering and exiting a vehicle or getting on and off furniture**." Ramp *or* step. **The 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats** put it this way: "At home, environmental modification can also be used to preserve access to preferred areas. **The AKC**, quoting Dr. Amanda Steffen, a certified veterinary acupuncturist, "recommends using dog ramps **or** stairs for arthritic dogs." **Cornell's Riney Canine Health Center**, listing lifestyle changes for osteoarthritis, names "**use of non-slip rugs and ramps** to get on beds, couches or cars."<Citation n={10} source="Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Riney Canine Health Center — “Osteoarthritis”, page last updated 9 December 2025, read 22 August 2026" url="https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/riney-canine-health-center/canine-health-information/osteoarthritis" /> This one does name ramps without steps — and it names non-slip rugs first.

**PetMD is the one source that makes the categorical claim.** Its 2025 article states that "the difference between the two is that stairs still require a dog to step up and put some strain on their legs and joints, whereas a ramp allows a mild incline that a dog can navigate without impact on their joints," and that "**if a pet has arthritis or any other pre-existing joint or back conditions, a ramp is recommended over stairs**." It also gives the size rule that this article's premise rests on: "small dogs generally do well with stairs, while medium and large dogs may prefer ramps, which are easier on their joints." There is one named specialist on record, and we had to go to an archive to find him. In a 2018 PetMD piece, the veterinary neurologist **Dr. Jay McDonnell, DACVIM**, "recommends dog ramps for pups with neurological issues and problems that can limit their mobility, including arthritis," because "many of these dogs do not have the strength in their back legs to jump up into the back of a car or truck," and because "jumping out of the vehicle or leaping off the back stairs also can jar and injure the spinal cord."<Citation n={12} source="Bocco D. “Do You Need a Dog Ramp?” PetMD, 8 May 2018, quoting Jay McDonnell DACVIM — ARCHIVED COPY. Nobody independent is telling you the ramp is the only acceptable answer. A guideline body (AAHA), a veterinary hospital network (VCA) and the AKC all say **ramps or steps**. Cornell says ramps and non-slip rugs. One consumer health site says ramps over stairs for arthritic dogs, unattributed. The absolute version — "the only solution that is completely impact-free" — comes from a company that sells hardwood ramps for $425.

## The thing they all agree on is the thing nobody searches for

Go back to the corpus table and look at what sits second.

Unlike either, it is not a product category. It is a floor.

Add the neighbouring row: floor traction — rugs, runners, mats — appears in 22 more videos. Paw traction, the grips and boots people reach for instead, appears in three.

Now notice something about the authority section above. VCA says "provide non-skid floor surfaces." AAHA specifies "secure footing (carpet runners)." It matters because of a sentence owners say constantly: *he can't do the stairs any more.* Sometimes that is a joint that has run out. Sometimes it is a dog who cannot get purchase on the first tread and has learned that trying hurts. Those two dogs need entirely different things, and only one of them needs a new apparatus.

### And the category built to fix it fails at exactly that

Here is the third thing we counted, and it is the one we would keep if we could keep only one.

It is the shelf that is missing, not the buyers.

It had **16 critical reviews** in our sample.

- **Eight of the sixteen describe the tread failing to stay put** — losing its stick, corners lifting, or the owner resorting to fastening it down by hand.
- **Five of those eight name washing as the thing that broke it.**
- **Two more describe the adhesive damaging the stair itself** — lifting paint, or leaving residue behind.

So **ten of sixteen critical reviews are about the adhesive**, and the single most-named trigger is putting the product through a wash.

Now read the listing's own bullets, which we retrieved the same day. The treads "can be washed repeatedly **30 times** without affecting the slip resistance." Repositioning them "won't leave any residue, always keeping your floors intact." That 30-wash figure deserves a moment, because it is genuinely remarkable in context. **It is the only quantified durability claim we have found anywhere in this category** — the one number anybody publishes. It is also the exact claim its critical reviewers contradict most often. And it arrives, like every other claim in this aisle, with no test method attached: no standard, no laboratory, no definition of what "affecting the slip resistance" would even mean, because as our other product page records, a search of all 25 stair-tread SKUs in a rival maker's catalogue for ASTM, ANSI, A326.3, D2047, coefficient of friction, DCOF or NFSI returns nothing at all.<Citation n={16} source="Koeckritz Rugs, manufacturer product pages for its Dog Assist carpet stair tread lines, read 22 August 2026 — 25 tread SKUs across 13 lines, sold in sets of 6, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 with no set of 7 and no $120.99 price point; the Cornerstone line is $66.55 for six 9 x 27 in treads, or $11.09 each. **So: a category sold entirely on grip, in which no manufacturer publishes a measurement of grip, whose busiest traction product is most often faulted for losing its grip — usually after being cleaned the way its own label permits.**

**And the failure does not transfer, which is the part that stops this being a general warning.** Adhesion is a tread problem specifically. Across the 14 critical reviews of the Tsukiko ramp, the 7 of the aodisman steps and the 2 of the Tresbro ramp, the complaints are structural and behavioural — things flexing, wobbling, arriving broken, or dogs declining to use them — and in the whole 40-review corpus only two reviews describe a ramp's own surface as too slick underfoot. **"My dog is slipping" does not automatically mean "buy treads."**

### What we would actually do about a slipping dog

The market failure is real, and we checked it rather than assuming it: searching for non-slip floor runners for dogs returns, overwhelmingly, muddy-paw door mats — absorbent mats for wiping feet at the back door, not traction runners for a hallway a stiff dog crosses forty times a day. The shelf that matches the veterinary consensus does not exist.

We should be straight about the evidence here too, because it is thinner than the confidence with which everyone asserts it. We could find **no primary veterinary study measuring paw-pad friction on flooring types, slip events on smooth floors, or flooring type against gait.** Four independent bodies recommend secure footing, the mechanism is obvious, and nobody has tested it. We follow the advice. We are telling you it is untested.

**It was down to nine sets when we checked**, so if it is gone by the time you read this, that is why. **Count your stairs** — seven treads cover seven steps, and a typical flight has more, which makes it a $242 purchase rather than a $121 one. We are recommending a tread while publishing a finding that treads come unstuck, so here is how we hold both. The failures counted above cluster on one specific product and one specific behaviour — washing an adhesive-backed mat and expecting the adhesive to survive. This is a different construction, taped rather than self-adhesive, and it is not the product those reviews are about. It is also not tested, by anyone, on grip. ## What the primary literature says — including the part that cuts against the ramp

So we went to the studies. There are four canine papers that put stairs and slopes under motion-capture cameras, and read together they are more interesting than the marketing on either side.

**In the hind limb, going down, stairs demand more.** Seven healthy hound-type dogs had reflective markers placed over the joints of the right hind leg and were filmed by four 60 Hz infrared cameras descending stairs and descending a continuous slope of equivalent angle. The result: "Stair descent resulted in significantly greater femorotibial flexion and tibiotarsal flexion and extension compared with continuous slope descent," with significantly greater range of motion at hip, stifle and hock.<Citation n={18} source="Millard RP, Headrick JF, Millis DL. Kinematic analysis of the pelvic limbs of healthy dogs during stair and decline slope walking. J Small Anim Pract 2010;51(8):419-422 (PMID 20630021)" url="https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1748-5827.2010.00956.x" /> Note what the researchers did there — they *matched the gradient*, so the only thing being tested was whether the surface was stepped or continuous.

That paper's closing sentence is the most useful line in this whole literature, and it comes from a rehabilitation laboratory with nothing to sell you: stair descent "may be a useful therapeutic exercise to improve ROM in dogs with musculoskeletal disease of the pelvic limb, and **ramp descent may be easier for dogs with limited motion of pelvic limb joints**."<Citation n={18} source="Millard RP, Headrick JF, Millis DL. A dog with hip or stifle arthritis is, by definition, a dog with limited motion of pelvic limb joints.

**Going up, stairs also ask more of the hind end than flat ground.** Eight orthopaedically normal dogs walked up four custom-built steps and then trotted across a level space: "All joints of the pelvic limb undergo a greater joint motion to ascend stairs," with significantly greater maximum flexion at stifle and tarsus.<Citation n={19} source="Durant AM, Millis DL, Headrick JF. Kinematics of stair ascent in healthy dogs. Vet Comp Orthop Traumatol 2011;24(2):99-105 (PMID 21243173)" url="https://doi.org/10.3415/VCOT-10-03-0038" /> The comparator there is level walking, not a ramp — so it tells you stairs are work, not that a ramp is less work.

**And now the finding that cuts the other way, which we print because it is true.** In the *front* limb, the ramp is the harder one. Eight adult dogs with no orthopaedic or neurological lameness were filmed ascending both: "ramp and stair ascent consistently had greater range of motion compared to trotting on a flat surface, and **ramp ascent had significantly greater range of motion compared to stair ascent** (P&lt;0.05)." Shoulder flexion and extension, elbow extension and carpal flexion were all significantly greater on the ramp.<Citation n={20} source="Carr JG, Millis DL, Weng HY. J Small Anim Pract 2013;54(8):409-413 (PMID 23848597)" url="https://doi.org/10.1111/jsap.12111" /> A fourth study, which built its ramp by laying a solid plank over the steps so both sat at an identical 35 degrees, found descending stairs increased shoulder and elbow motion over flat ground.<Citation n={21} source="Kopec NL, Williams JM, Tabor GF. Kinematic analysis of the thoracic limb of healthy dogs during descending stair and ramp exercises. Am J Vet Res 2018;79(1):33-41 (PMID 29287160)" url="https://doi.org/10.2460/ajvr.79.1.33" />

So **a ramp is gentler on the back end and asks more of the front end.** "Completely impact-free" is not a thing any of these papers found, and it is not a thing anyone has looked for.

### Three things nobody has measured, which we would rather you heard from us

**Nobody has measured the forces.** Every canine stair study we can find is kinematic — it measures joint *angles*. We could locate no published study measuring ground reaction forces or joint loads on stairs in dogs. So when you read that stairs are "high impact," or that a ramp "distributes the load evenly across all four paws," understand that these are mechanical stories rather than measurements. Nobody has put a force plate on a staircase and published the result.

**Nobody has run the trial.** There is no randomised trial, no controlled trial and no cohort study testing ramps, steps or stair avoidance as an intervention in dogs with osteoarthritis. Not one, of any design. The clinical recommendation is expert reasoning from kinematics and from what clinicians see. It is reasonable. It is not a tested treatment, and this site has said the equivalent about [orthopedic beds](/beds/do-orthopedic-dog-beds-work) and [most joint supplements](/supplements/best-joint-supplements-for-dogs).

**Nobody has published the angles.** Three of those four studies sit behind paywalls that give direction and significance but not degrees. We are not going to invent a number to make this page look more precise than the evidence is.

### The part the laboratory held constant, and your tape measure does not

Every one of those studies matched the gradient — the same slope, stepped or smooth. **Your house does not match the gradient.**

A typical household staircase with a 7.5-inch rise on a 10-inch tread climbs at about **37 degrees**. A 64-inch ramp reaching a 24-inch bed climbs at about **22 degrees**. That is our own arithmetic from the makers' published dimensions, set out in full below.

So the practical case for a ramp does not rest on a slope being magic. It rests on the slope usually being *shallower* as well as continuous — and on the hind end, where arthritis and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy do their work, being the end that the continuous surface helps.

That is the argument. It is a good one. It is not the one the ramp companies are making, and it is not settled science.

## Two harms that have actually been counted

Most of this category argues from mechanism. Two studies argue from outcomes.

**Stair falls send dogs to emergency rooms.** Two university teaching hospitals reviewed every dog presented after falling down the stairs across five and a half years: 61 dogs. Spinal cord signs appeared in a third of them — ambulatory hind-leg weakness in 18%, non-ambulatory weakness in 11%, hind-leg paralysis in 5%. Limb injuries ran to 28% lameness, 7% with ligament or tendon disruption or a luxation, and **13% with a broken bone**. Traumatic brain injury was documented in 8%. Seventy-four percent went home.<Citation n={22} source="Burchette HM, Gerken K, Her J, Cooper ES, Yaxley PE, Young AA. Retrospective Evaluation of Stair-Related Injuries in Dogs Presenting to Emergency Centers: 61 Cases (2017-2022). Read the caveats with it, because the authors publish them themselves. There is **no denominator** — 61 cases out of an unknown number of dogs using stairs is not a risk rate and cannot be turned into one. Older dogs were *not* more likely to be injured, or injured worse, than younger ones. And the authors' own sentence deserves quoting: "In some cases, it may be difficult to determine whether the fall caused the injury or whether disease precipitated the fall."<Citation n={22} source="Burchette HM, Gerken K, Her J, Cooper ES, Yaxley PE, Young AA. Retrospective Evaluation of Stair-Related Injuries in Dogs Presenting to Emergency Centers: 61 Cases (2017-2022). J Vet Emerg Crit Care 2025;35(6):777-783 (PMID 41268968)" url="https://doi.org/10.1111/vec.70052" /> Some of those dogs may have fallen *because* something was already wrong.

**And in puppies, stairs are a measured risk factor for hip dysplasia.** A Norwegian prospective cohort followed 501 client-owned dogs from 103 litters — Newfoundlands, Labradors, Leonbergers and Irish Wolfhounds — from birth to official hip radiographs at 12 or 18 months. "Puppies walking on stairs from birth to 3 months of age had an increased risk of developing HD," while off-lead exercise in the same window was associated with *lower* risk. The authors' recommendation is unusually blunt for a journal: "puppies ≤ 3 months old should not be allowed access to stairs."<Citation n={23} source="Krontveit RI, Nodtvedt A, Saevik BK, Ropstad E, Trangerud C. Hold that one carefully. Four large and giant breeds, in Norway, with exposures collected by questionnaire — which means recall bias, and it means the finding is about the first twelve weeks of a big dog's life, not about your senior. It does not transfer to an adult Cocker Spaniel. But it is a real, non-commercial, 501-dog signal that stairs are not neutral, and it never appears in the pages arguing this question.

## So: the fifty-pound old dog in the search box

Put it together for the dog in the query.

He is over the size where PetMD's rule stays neutral. If he is old enough that you are shopping for equipment, his hind end is very likely the end that is failing — that is what arthritis, hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy have in common — and the hind end is the one the continuous slope helps, on the only matched-gradient study anybody has run. The ramp's known cost, more front-limb motion on the way up, is the trade you want on that dog rather than the one to avoid.

**For that dog, we would buy the ramp.** The longest one the room will take, used on the lowest setting that reaches.

And we will say plainly what that recommendation is and is not. It is our read of a seven-dog kinematic study, a gradient calculation, and a clinical consensus that stops short of agreeing with us. It is not a guideline, because no guideline says it. If your vet says steps are fine for your dog, your vet has looked at your dog and we have not.

Seventy-one inches is the number to care about here — it is what lets this ramp reach a 24-inch bed at about 20 degrees, where a 55-inch ramp climbing to the same bed sits at nearly 26. It is 19.5 inches wide, which is the difference between a stiff dog placing four feet confidently and refusing, and it is rated to 200 lb. ## Nobody in this aisle publishes an angle. Nobody publishes a test.

This is the finding we would print if it sold nothing, and it is the same gap this site has documented in beds and in supplements: the number that decides whether the product works is the number nobody prints.

For a ramp that number is the incline. For steps it is the rise per step. For either, a load rating should arrive with a test method attached.

We went through the live listings for six current products on 22 August 2026 and found **no published incline angle on any ramp and no test method behind any weight rating.** One ramp states that it "has passed strict weight and drop tests" without naming a standard, a load, a drop height or a laboratory.<Citation n={25} source="Amazon listing B0GKG1ZKGP, Tresbro 55.11 in adjustable wooden dog ramp — retrieved via the Amazon Creators API, 22 August 2026: $139.99, In Stock; feature bullets state five heights of 19.29, 21.85, 24.61, 25.98 and 27.17 in, a 200 lb load rating, and that the ramp 'has passed strict weight and drop tests' without naming a standard, a load, a drop height or a laboratory" url="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GKG1ZKGP" /> Several are sold under brand names with no meaningful presence outside the marketplace.

So we did the arithmetic ourselves, from the makers' own published dimensions.

<Callout type="note" title="How we calculated these, and where the method is weak">
The incline is the angle whose sine is the height divided by the ramp's length — so a 64-inch ramp reaching 24 inches sits at 22 degrees. Two things to hold against it. **We treat the listed overall length as the sloped surface**, and several of these ramps put a flat landing platform at the top, which shortens the actual slope and makes the real angle *steeper* than our figure. Every number below is a best case. And **there is no veterinary standard for a correct incline** — no study establishes a threshold, and we will not invent one. The working rule this site has used for years is that shallower is always better and that roughly 20 to 25 degrees is a sensible ceiling for a sore dog. That is a rule of thumb, not a finding.

**And the ratings that arrive without a test method are the ones buyers say give way.** This is where the review corpus earns its place a second time. The aodisman steps advertise support for dogs "up to 90 lbs"; **three of their seven critical reviews describe the steps caving, collapsing or being distrusted under dogs at or below that weight**, one of them putting the practical ceiling at about 50 lb. But a load rating with no test behind it is not a number, and this is what that looks like from the buyer's side.

Read the pattern rather than the winners. **The same ramp is a good ramp at its lowest setting and a mediocre one at its highest**, and the adjustment knob owners treat as a convenience is the single control that decides whether the product does its job. A 55-inch ramp cranked to 27 inches climbs at nearly 30 degrees — closer to a staircase than to the gentle gradient in the photograph on the box.

The same arithmetic works on steps, and it is the number to buy on. Divide total height by the number of steps. That is the whole product, and neither maker advertises it — we derived both figures from dimensions rather than reading them off a listing.

## The steps case, made honestly

Steps are not a bad product. They are a product with a narrower correct population than their sales volume suggests — and there are two situations where they are right even for a dog we would otherwise point towards a ramp.

**The first is refusal.** In our corpus the dog refusing the equipment is its own failure mode: 14 of 73 videos, and — because of exactly the distortion we warned you about — 412,698 combined views, a figure dominated by a small number of very popular videos.<Citation n={1} source="Dog Orthopedic first-party research: senior-dog mobility video corpus, built 22 August 2026 — 73 transcripts totalling 103,012 words drawn from a 136-video roster across 23 search queries; roster discovery by yt-dlp, transcripts via TranscriptAPI, tracks under 200 words discarded. > "A lot of owners buy a ramp, prop it against the stairs once, and stop when the dog refuses it."

A ramp that lives behind the sofa is worse than steps the dog will actually climb. Before you conclude yours is a refuser, though, read [my dog won't use the ramp](/tools/dog-wont-use-ramp): refusal is five different problems and most are fixable with a fortnight of food.

**The second is floor space, and the leaning problem.** A gentle ramp is a long ramp, and a long ramp has to go somewhere — sixty inches of run-out is most of a small bedroom. Another channel names the practical failure that follows:

That is not a small objection. A ramp that slips under a heavy dog once will not get a second use, and the freestanding wooden ramps in the table above exist precisely because of it.

If steps are your answer, these are the ones we carry, and the reason is the geometry above: 17.5 inches across four steps is a 4.4-inch lift, which is the gentlest we can find at this height. Foam rather than hollow plastic matters too, because the step gives under the landing instead of stopping the paw dead. There is a third product shape worth knowing about, sold as wedges that sit on your existing stairs and part-fill each riser. The set we looked at offers heights of 4.2, 5.5 and 5.8 inches.<Citation n={30} source="Amazon listing B0H36FRSW2, Rayki Dog Ramp for Stairs 6 Pack adjustable wooden stair wedges — retrieved via the Amazon Creators API, 22 August 2026: $99.99, In Stock; feature bullets state three heights of 4.2, 5.5 and 5.8 in, a requirement for stair treads over 10 in, and 'Built for small dogs under 30 lbs'" url="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H36FRSW2" /> Run the geometry: on a staircase with a 7.5-inch rise, the tallest wedge turns each step into a 30-degree climb of 5.8 inches plus a residual 1.7-inch step — a genuine improvement on a 37-degree stair, and not the same thing as a ramp. We are not linking it, for a reason its own listing supplies: it is "Built for small dogs under 30 lbs." That excludes most of the dogs this article is about, and it is worth naming because the product's category placement does not.

## What this article will not tell you about IVDD

If you arrived here from a disc diagnosis, one thing we will state and one we will not.

What a primary source supports: during the acute period after a thoracolumbar disc extrusion, the ACVIM consensus statement recommends at least four weeks of restricted activity — a crate or a small room without furniture, out only on a leash to toilet, no jumping on or off furniture, **no stairs** — and the panel graded that recommendation as low-level evidence rather than proof.<Citation n={31} source="Olby NJ, Moore SA, Brisson B, et al. ACVIM consensus statement on diagnosis and management of acute canine thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion. J Vet Intern Med 2022;36(5):1570-1596" url="https://doi.org/10.1111/jvim.16480" /> That is the restricted period, and your own vet sets its length.

What we will not print: the widely repeated claim that a dog who has had IVDD must never use steps again for the rest of his life. We went looking for its source and found companies that sell ramps, and a forum thread. It may well be sound advice. ## How we built this, and what each part cannot show

Three separate bodies of evidence sit underneath this article, and they fail in different ways. Anyone should be able to reproduce or attack them, so here is exactly what each one is.

**The video corpus.** We discovered a roster of 136 videos across 23 search queries, pulled the transcript for every one that had a usable track, and discarded anything under 200 words as a junk caption file, leaving **73 transcripts and 103,012 words**. Categories were matched by regular expression over the full transcript, and **each video counts once per category however often it repeats a term** — without that rule the ranking measures verbosity rather than consensus. **What it cannot show:** what dogs need. It is a census of what creators publish. "Combined views" is a popularity proxy only, and a single 200,000-view video moves a whole row. **The critical-review corpus.** We pulled **40 reviews rated one to three stars across five current products**, 37 marked verified purchase, dated May 2025 to August 2026. Failure themes were counted by hand, by us. **What it cannot show:** how good these products are. **We asked only for critical reviews, deliberately, because we were hunting failure modes — so nothing here is a satisfaction rate and it must not be read as one.** A product with 16 critical reviews may have thousands of happy ones — the tread set above carries 8,509 ratings in total, and we read sixteen of them. **The listings and the published literature.** Every price, dimension, load rating and feature bullet was retrieved from the Amazon Creators API on 22 August 2026 and is cited to the individual listing. Every study is cited with a DOI or PMID and, where the finding is load-bearing, quoted verbatim from the abstract rather than paraphrased. **What none of it can show:** the three absences named above — no canine kinetic study of stairs, no interventional trial of ramps or steps in osteoarthritis, and no measurement of flooring friction in dogs. We would rather publish the shape of the hole than fill it with confident prose.

## What to do this week

**Start with the floor, because it is the only thing everyone agrees on.** Walk the route your dog takes most and look down. If he splays, scrabbles or hesitates at the same spot every time, that spot is the problem — and a rug you already own costs nothing to test.

**If your dog is small, agile and has no joint or spinal diagnosis:** steps are fine, and no independent source will tell you otherwise. Buy on the rise per step and the footprint, not the brand.

**If your dog is medium or large, or has arthritis, hip dysplasia or a spinal or neurological diagnosis:** we would buy the longest ramp the room can take and use the lowest setting that reaches. Know that this is our read of the kinematics and the geometry rather than a guideline position, and that the guideline bodies say either.

**And if he is newly reluctant on stairs he managed last month, that is an appointment, not a purchase.** A dog who has suddenly stopped doing something he could do is telling you something. Equipment works better on a treated dog than instead of one, and we would rather lose the sale than have you buy a ramp for a problem that needed a vet.
