Mid-range orthopedic memory foam alternative to Big Barker
The bed we recommend most often after Big Barker. Solid memory foam (not shredded), bolstered on three sides, real water resistance under the cover. For dogs under 80 lb without a clinical diagnosis, this is the right balance of cost and durability — buy the Large or X-Large, because those are the sizes with the full 4-inch base. The honest caveat as of August 2026: the X-Large listing has gone from out of stock to a 1-to-2-month shipping delay at $226.45, and a bed that arrives in October is no answer for a dog who cannot get comfortable tonight. The Chewy route we used to point to — the line sold there as the "Ultimate Lounge" — is currently unverifiable: Chewy has refused every retrieval we have attempted (HTTP 429, five consecutive attempts through 2026-08-28), so treat it as real only once you can see a working add-to-cart button. What is happening to the brand
We try to answer the question a listing never will: is this product going to exist next year? For PetFusion in August 2026, the checkable facts point one way. Petmate's website carries the PetFusion range with the line "Now part of the Petmate family," and the Ultimate memory foam bed is not among the 26 PetFusion products listed there — although the page's own descriptive copy still praises "the PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed with Memory Foam" as a standout (both re-read 2026-08-28). The brand's own original domain, petfusion.com, no longer hosts a store — it redirects to a domain-for-sale lander, and the Internet Archive shows it already doing so on 2025-03-01, so the store has been gone for at least eighteen months. And the Amazon X-Large listing has spent weeks oscillating between "Temporarily out of stock" and "usually ships within 1 to 2 months" (it read the latter, at $226.45, on 2026-08-28). What we can verify stops there. Nobody has published a discontinuation notice, and an acquisition often keeps good products alive under a new label. But the practical buying advice writes itself: do not build a replacement plan around this bed, do not wait two months for one when a dog is uncomfortable tonight, and if a listing claiming to be PetFusion appears at an unfamiliar domain, treat it with the suspicion any orphaned brand name deserves — we found lookalike "official" PetFusion storefronts we could not verify and do not link.
Who should not buy it
Three dogs, plainly. A dog over roughly 80–90 lb with a diagnosed orthopedic condition — the 4-inch memory foam base is honest for its price, but at that weight and duty cycle the physics favour a thicker, firmer build with a longer-warranted core. A determined chewer — the cover stitching is the part that fails first, and no bed with a sewn fabric cover survives a dog who works seams. And any dog whose owner needs the bed this week: as of 2026-08-16 the X-Large is out of stock on Amazon entirely, after two weeks of quoting a 1-to-2-month shipping delay, and the right response to that is a different retailer or a different bed, not a wait.
The recurring complaint, adjudicated
The heat complaint is fair and physical, not anecdotal. Memory foam works by softening where body heat warms it, which is the same property that makes it retain that heat — a dog sleeping hot on it in July is experiencing the mechanism, not a defect. If your dog already seeks out tile in summer, that choice of sleeping spot is data, and this is the wrong construction for him in the warm months regardless of brand.

The other honest difference runs the opposite way: the PetFusion has a waterproof liner under the cover as standard, which Big Barker sells as a $69.95–$99.95 add-on.
