Best for
Protecting the top of a scuffing or knuckling paw while a diagnosis is underway, and paw protection on abrasive ground
The right tool for one narrow, honest job: keeping the skin on the top of a scuffing or knuckling paw intact while the diagnosis that explains the paw gets made. The Vibram sole and ripstop upper take the abrasion the dorsum was taking, the pair-of-two format means a one-paw problem does not force a four-boot purchase, and the by-width sizing is more honest than the weight-chart sizing most of this category uses. What it is not is a treatment: nothing about a boot changes why the paw is landing wrong, a booted foot feels the ground less, and a dog who knuckles needs an examination more than he needs equipment. Buy it to protect skin you can see being worn, and book the appointment first.

What doesn't
- A boot blunts what the paw pad feels. For a dog whose underlying problem is not knowing where his foot is, that is a real cost, and it is why this is a skin-protection purchase, not a mobility treatment
- Most dogs high-step, freeze, or shake the boot at first wearing — acclimatization takes sessions, not minutes, and some dogs never accept boots at all
- A true dragging paw will eventually wear through the toe of the upper. That is the boot doing its job, but it makes this a recurring cost on a progressive condition, not a one-time purchase
- Hook-and-loop closures need re-checking mid-walk — the manufacturer's own guidance is to adjust the fit 15 minutes into an activity

Who this is actually for
The buyer this page is written for is not the hiker the marketing photographs. It is the owner of a dog who has started to drag or knuckle a hind paw, whose nails or toe skin are visibly wearing, and who has an appointment booked but walks to survive until it. For that dog, one pair, sized to the hind paws, does the whole job. The front paws do not need boots, and Ruffwear's pair-of-two format — which the brand itself explains as a response to dogs having wider front paws than rear — happens to serve the one-bad-paw buyer better than any set-of-four competitor.
The measurement confound, stated plainly
If you are filming your dog's gait for the vet — and you should be — film him bare-pawed. A boot changes how a paw lands and how much the dog feels it land, and a video shot with the boot on shows the vet the boot, not the deficit. The same applies to the paw-replacement test: run it on a bare paw. Put the boot on for the walk, and take it off for the evidence.

The Amazon listing (first-party, Ruffwear, Inc.) was in stock at $49.99 — unchanged since our first check on 2026-08-14. The manufacturer's own store was not: on the same day, ruffwear.com listed every size and colour of the Grip Trex pairs as out of stock, marked "Coming Soon." Price parity between the two channels held, so nothing is lost by buying the Amazon listing — for now it is simply the only one that ships. If you are between sizes and expect to exchange, note that an Amazon return is an Amazon return; the fit help on Ruffwear's site still works even when its cart does not.
What wears first
On a dragging paw, the toe of the mesh upper takes the abrasion that was taking the skin — expect scuffing there first, well before the Vibram sole shows wear. That is the purchase doing what it was bought to do, but plan for it: on a progressive condition, this is a recurring cost, and a second pair bought at the first sign of wear-through beats a barefoot week waiting for delivery.
