What changed on this page today

Two things, and one of them was our error.

We said this bed is not bolstered. It is. The con used to read "Not bolstered — wrong shape for a nester," and that was simply wrong. Casper's own product page says "the supportive foam bolsters of the bed also create a safe space for dogs to lay their heads," and the Amazon listing's third feature bullet says the same thing. A reader with a nester — a dog who sleeps curled with his chin propped on an edge — was being steered away from this bed for a reason that does not exist. Removed.

The price band was wrong in the cheap direction. We published $125–$235. Pulled size by size from Casper's own live variant feed on 14 August 2026:

All three colourways — Gray, Blue and Sand — are the same price at every size, which is worth saying because in this category they often are not. The Amazon Medium was $169.00 on the same day, sold by Amazon.com — exact parity with direct. Re-checked 21 August 2026: the Amazon Medium had dropped to $152.10, about $17 under direct. Unlike most beds we cover, the channel homework here never punishes you: Amazon has matched or beaten direct on both checks.

The number that actually decides this bed, and the fact that Casper publishes it twice, differently

Every bolstered bed lists an outer footprint that is bigger than the part the dog lies on. The Casper Medium is listed at 25 × 33 × 6 inches. The flat area inside the bolsters — Casper calls it the "inner sleep area" — is 25 × 17 inches. So a third of the width of the box is wall, not bed.

The depth of that inner area is the number that matters most for a dog with sore joints, because it decides whether he bottoms out onto the floor through the foam. And here Casper's two channels do not agree:

• casper.com gives the inner sleep area as 19 × 12 × 3.5 in (Small), 25 × 17 × 3.5 in (Medium), 35 × 25 × 3.5 in (Large).
• The Amazon listing for that same Medium says, in its own first feature bullet, "Inner Sleep Area-25 x 17 x 2 inches."

Same company, same product, same week, 3.5 inches versus 2 inches. We are not going to resolve it for them, because we cannot — we have not put a ruler in one. We are going to print it, because the difference is not academic. Our bed size chart sets its own floors at 2 inches of foam under 25 lb, 3 inches from 25–40 lb, 4 inches from 40–80 lb. At 3.5 inches this bed clears the 25–40 lb band. At 2 inches it does not. The manufacturer's own inconsistency is the difference between "fine for a 35 lb dog" and "not fine for a 35 lb dog," and the buyer has no way to know which.

If you own one, you can settle it yourself in ten seconds with a ruler pressed into the middle of the flat area. We would genuinely like to know.

What we will not tell you about the foam

We will not give you a density figure, because Casper does not publish one. Nor does Big Barker, nor K9 Ballistics, nor Paw.com. Density in pounds per cubic foot is what predicts compression set — the slow permanent flattening that is how a foam bed actually dies — and it is close to unobtainable across this entire category. Any page that tells you to "shop for at least X lb/cu ft" is giving you a rule you cannot apply to the products on sale. We deleted that advice from our own flagship bed page for exactly that reason.

What you can check instead is the warranty, because a foam warranty is a manufacturer betting its own money on how long its foam lasts. Casper offers one year, calls it Limited, and names no threshold — there is no stated depth of sag at which a flattened bed becomes a claim. Compare that to the beds built for this job: K9 Ballistics warrants ten years against flattening "more than 2 inches" and tells you to claim with a photo of the uncovered mattress next to a ruler; Bully Beds warrants twenty years past 2.5 inches on the flat sleeping area. Those are promises you can measure. A one-year limited warranty with no number is not a worse promise because Casper is careless — it is a different product being sold for a different reason, and the reason is that it looks good in your living room.

Who should buy it, honestly

A healthy dog under about 40 pounds, in a home where the bed has to look like furniture, owned by someone who already likes Casper's mattresses and wants the set to match. On that brief it is a good buy at $139–$249, the cover washes, the foam is described in real terms, and it has bolsters for a dog who wants them.

A dog with diagnosed hip dysplasia, elbow disease or osteoarthritis should be on something thicker, wider and warranted for longer. That is not a knock on Casper. It is what the words "inner sleep area 25 × 17" mean when your dog is 70 pounds and cannot get comfortable.

The cheaper thing first

If your dog is currently on the floor or on a flattened bed, almost any foam of adequate depth beats what he has now, and the money is better spent on depth than on design. If he already has a bed with enough foam under him and you are shopping because the old one looks tired, buy a replacement cover rather than a new bed — Casper sells its own at $69 (Small), $89 (Medium) and $139 (Large), which is worth noticing mainly because the Large cover costs exactly what a whole Small bed costs.
