My Dog Won't Use the Ramp: The Five Reasons, and the Fix for Each

Ramp refusal is five different problems, not one. Here is how to tell which one you have, the published acclimation numbers that show why three sessions was never enough, and what to change first.

Your dog is not being stubborn. Ramp refusal is five separate problems wearing the same coat — an untrustworthy surface, too steep an angle, a ramp that moved once, a bad first introduction, or a dog who genuinely cannot do it — and each has a different fix. Three of the five cost nothing to correct with the ramp already in your hallway. Work out which one you have before you buy another ramp, and expect the training to take a week or two of short sessions rather than one determined afternoon. And do not quit: the jump you are trying to replace puts about three and a half times your dog's body weight through front legs that already carry 60% of him standing still.

First, the number that decides whether this is worth the trouble#

If you are close to giving up, read this section and then decide.

In 2018, a group of UK researchers put fifteen healthy adult dogs on platforms at three heights chosen to represent real vehicle boot sills — 0.55, 0.65, and 0.75 metres, or about 21.7, 25.6, and 29.5 inches — and had each dog jump down onto a force platform three times. Peak forelimb vertical ground reaction force rose with every step up in height: 27.35 ± 4.14 N/kg at 0.55 m, 30.84 ± 3.66 N/kg at 0.65 m, and 34.12 ± 3.63 N/kg at 0.75 m, with the differences statistically significant at P = 0.001. Their conclusion was cautious and worth quoting: allowing dogs to jump from bigger cars with a higher boot sill "may result in augmented levels of loading on anatomical structures."[1]

Convert those into something you can hold. Dividing by gravity, 34.12 N/kg is about 3.5 times body weight; 27.35 N/kg is about 2.8. For a 70-pound dog, the jump off an SUV tailgate is roughly 240 pounds of peak force arriving through the front end in a fraction of a second.

And the front end was already the busy end. A 2021 study weighed 552 dogs across 123 breeds, from Chihuahua to Mastiff, alternating foreleg and hind leg support on a digital scale. The mean proportion of mass carried on the forelegs was 60.4%, with an individual range of 47.6% to 74.4%, and no significant change in that ratio with body size.[2]

Here is the honest boundary on all of that. Pardey and colleagues measured loading in healthy dogs. They did not follow those dogs to see who got hurt, and nobody has. Anyone who tells you a number for how much elbow arthritis is caused by jumping out of cars is inventing it. What the evidence supports is narrower and still useful: the descent is the loaded half of the trip, the load scales with the height of your car, and it lands on the limbs that were already doing most of the work.

That is why the ramp is worth two more weeks of patience.

Why a ramp is not "easier" — and why that matters for refusal#

This is the part almost nobody tells owners, and it explains a lot of stalled ramp training.

Two kinematic studies looked at what a slope actually asks of a dog's front end. In 2013, Carr, Millis and Weng put eight sound adult dogs through a custom ramp and a set of stairs, measured with a two-dimensional kinematic system, and compared both against unimpeded trotting on the flat. Ramp and stair ascent both produced greater forelimb range of motion than trotting — and ramp ascent produced significantly greater range of motion than stair ascent, with shoulder flexion and extension, elbow extension, and carpal flexion all greater on the ramp.[3] A companion study in 2018 built the descending version, using four steps at a 35° slope and then a solid plank laid over those same steps to make a 35° ramp, and found descent changes the picture again: shoulder and elbow range of motion were greater on the stairs than on the flat, and peak elbow extension was greatest on the flat.[4]

Both papers were written for rehabilitation therapists who want to load a joint through more range. Read them as an owner and they say something different, and it is the single most useful idea in this article:

A ramp does not make the climb easier. It makes it slower and more controlled. Those are not the same thing, and only one of them is what your dog's shoulder needs.

Which means two things for your dog planting his feet at the bottom. First, he may not be frightened at all — a steep ramp is genuine sustained work for a shoulder or a hip, and refusing it can be an accurate assessment. Second, if a dog with real joint disease finds your ramp harder than the hop, your angle is wrong, and no amount of chicken will fix an angle.

The five reasons, and how to tell them apart#

Run through these in order. The diagnosis changes the fix completely, and four out of five have nothing to do with buying a different ramp.

1. The surface. He does not trust what is under his nails. The test is easy: put the ramp flat on the floor and see whether he will walk its length for food. A dog who refuses a flat ramp is telling you about the surface, not the height. Slick PVC, a walking surface that flexes under load, or a hollow drum sound as claws hit plastic are all disqualifying to a dog who has already learned that floors can betray him. Fix: a bath towel or a length of cheap rubber-backed runner laid down the ramp, free, this afternoon. 2. The angle. He will walk it flat but not raised. This is geometry, and geometry is arithmetic rather than opinion. A dog needs to be able to see a landing he believes in, and a steep incline hides the ground until he commits. Fix: lower the target. Train against a single step, then a garden wall, then the car. If your ramp cannot reach a shallow angle at your car's height, no training schedule will rescue it.

3. The wobble. It shifted under him once. This is the reason dogs abandon ramps they previously used, and owners rarely connect the two events because the wobble looked minor to them and was not minor to the dog. A ramp resting on a bumper lip, a ramp on gravel, a ramp whose rubber feet have gone hard — all of them move a few millimetres at the exact moment the dog's weight transfers. Fix: stabilise before you retrain. Use the safety tether if your ramp has one, park so the ramp lands on level ground, and put a foot or a knee against the low end for the first sessions.

4. The introduction. He was lifted, pushed, pulled by the collar, or lured to the middle and then trapped there. Now the ramp predicts being handled, and that prediction is doing the refusing. The AVSAB position statement on humane dog training lists exactly the behaviours you would have seen and probably read as stubbornness — "tense body, lower body posture, lip licking, tail lowering, lifting front leg, panting, yawning" — as stress responses observed in dogs trained with aversive methods, and notes that the effect outlasts the training session: dogs continued showing stress-related behaviour when the learned cue was later presented.[5] Fix: this is the slowest of the five, and the only one where the equipment is now the obstacle. Start the ramp somewhere else in the house, at a different orientation, flat, with the dog free to leave.

5. He cannot. The ramp is not the problem. A dog whose back end is failing, whose nails scrape on a flat floor, or who has stopped wanting to be picked up at all is telling you about a condition, not a preference. Fix: the appointment, not the ramp. The fifth row is the one owners miss most often. Most people train the ascent, get a success, and treat the job as done. Descending a slope is a different motor task with a different loading pattern, it is the direction the dog cannot see the bottom of, and it is where refusal reappears a week later.

How long this actually takes, with a real number#

The reason so much ramp training fails is that owners are working to a schedule nobody ever measured. Most ramp guides — including, until today, our own — suggest about three sessions. That number has no source behind it. It is what sounds reasonable.

There is one genuinely relevant published figure, and it comes from an adjacent task. In 2022, a group at Penn Vet published a formalized method for acclimating dogs to voluntary treadmill locomotion — an unfamiliar, moving, inclined surface, which is a harder version of the problem you have. Eight working dogs, two to three sessions a week over roughly five weeks, sessions capped at a maximum of ten minutes specifically to "increase the likelihood of ending with a positive experience," rewards delivered as an intermittent frozen peanut-butter-and-water mixture, and progression only when the dog was comfortable at the current level, with the handler reducing difficulty at the first behavioural sign of stress. Seven of eight dogs reached full acclimation. It took an average of 9.4 sessions, and one dog never got there.[6]

A ramp is easier than a treadmill, and those were working dogs, not arthritic seniors. Do not read 9.4 as your target. Read it as permission: if your dog is on session four and still hesitant, you are not failing and he is not being difficult. You are inside the normal range for teaching a dog to trust an unfamiliar surface, and the published protocol that worked capped sessions at ten minutes and reduced difficulty whenever the dog got tense.

Here is the protocol that follows from all of the above. It is not three sessions.

Rules that make it work, and every one of them comes from the sources above rather than from folklore:

  • Ten minutes maximum. Stop before he is bored, not after.
  • End on a success, even if that success is a stage you already passed.
  • Never lift, push, or pull him onto it. That converts problem 2 into problem 4, and problem 4 takes weeks.
  • Train the descent as its own skill, from one step, before you ever ask for it from the car.
  • When he gets tense, drop a stage. That is not indulgence, it is what the protocol that achieved 88% success actually did.
  • Feed at the surface, not from a hand held above his head.

Get the geometry right before you get anything else right#

Angle is the one variable you can calculate instead of guess, and it is the most common reason a perfectly good ramp fails. There is no published veterinary threshold for a safe canine ramp incline, so treat this as geometry with a sensible ceiling: shallower is always better for a sore joint, and a practical target is at or below about 20 to 25 degrees.

To hit 25 degrees, a ramp has to be about 2.4 times the height it climbs. For 20 degrees, about 2.9 times.

Look at the bottom-left cell. A 42-inch ramp against a 30-inch SUV floor sits at 45.6 degrees. That is not a steep ramp; it is a slide with grip. A dog refusing it has read the situation correctly, and the reasonable response is to agree with him.

The same arithmetic exposes a trap in telescoping ramps. Adjustable length means you are setting the angle every time you use it, including badly.

The most capable vehicle ramp we recommend, and the one to buy for a large dog and a high sill: 72 inches fully extended gets you to 24.6 degrees at an SUV cargo floor, it is rated to 400 lb, and the five-year warranty is the longest in the category. Use it fully extended every time — the adjustability that makes it fit any car is also the easiest way to accidentally give your dog a 50-degree slide. The Solvit telescopes from 39 to 72 inches, and the number that should change how you use it is the short end: collapsed to 39 inches against a 20-inch bed it is a 31-degree incline, and against a 30-inch SUV floor it is 50 degrees. If your dog refuses this ramp, check whether anybody in the household has been using it part-extended because it is quicker.

The honest costs. At the 14.7 pounds the listing gives it, this is not a heavy object, but it is an awkward one to carry one-handed while holding a lead. The PVC surface gets hot in direct summer sun. Fully extended it needs six feet of clear, level approach, which a supermarket car park will not always give you, and PVC is harsher underfoot than carpet for a dog whose nails already scrape. It is $129.99 from Amazon at the time of writing, which is a lot for something that lives in a boot. Rated to 400 pounds with a five-year warranty, so if you have a large dog it is genuinely a buy-once item.

The ramp we reach for first when a dog has already refused one. The extra width and the raised side edges do more for acceptance than any other feature at this price, and the carpet tread solves the surface problem that stops most dogs before height is ever the issue. It is heavier than its "portable" billing suggests, and the 200 lb ceiling rules it out for giant breeds. Buy it for the hesitant dog, not for the hiking-and-rain dog.

For refusal specifically, this is the ramp I would put a hesitant dog on, and the reason is two features nobody explains.

The first is width. The 71-inch model we link is 19.5 inches wide. Most vehicle ramps in this price range sit around 16 inches. Three and a half inches sounds trivial until you picture a 60-pound dog with a stiff hip trying to place four feet in a line on a narrow board, five feet in the air, with nothing either side. The second is raised edges. A lip along both sides gives a dog a boundary he can feel without looking, which is precisely the information a dog is missing when he stalls halfway up and freezes. The carpet-textured tread is the third: it solves problem 1 in the list above without a towel.

The honest costs, and I have corrected two of these today after checking the listing. It is not light: Pet Gear's own specification page for this model lists 26 pounds, while retailer listings for the range quote figures nearer 16, and I cannot reconcile those two numbers — either way, treat it as a two-hand carry, not a briefcase. The 200-pound capacity is a real ceiling for giant breeds and for anyone who intends to walk up alongside their dog. The carpet surface absorbs water, so this is the wrong ramp for a dog who goes out in the rain every day. And at 71 inches with a fixed length it has a big footprint indoors — there is no shortening it for a 16-inch couch. It was $90.33 when I checked, marked down from about $100, with only four units in stock and more on the way.

Free alternative first, as always: if your dog is small enough to lift comfortably and your only problem is the car, lift him. If your only problem is the couch, an ottoman pushed against it is a step, and it costs nothing. Ramps earn their money when the dog is too heavy to lift safely and the transition happens several times a day.

The training equipment that actually changes the outcome#

There is one purchase in this article that is not a ramp, and per pound it does more for the refusal problem than the ramp does.

Reward-based training falls apart when you are fumbling with a Ziploc in your pocket. The workflow is the whole argument. Ramp training is five to ten short sessions built entirely on delivering a reward at the moment the dog's front foot lands where you wanted, and the failure mode is not the dog — it is you, standing at a car bumper with a lead in one hand, a hand on the ramp's low end, and treats zipped inside a coat pocket you cannot reach. By the time you have the food out, the reward is landing three seconds late and marking something else entirely.

A pouch with a magnetic clasp you can open one-handed, worn at your waist, is what keeps a session inside the reinforcement window. Four carry positions matter here for an unobvious reason: at the car you want it at your hip, and on the floor at stage 1 you want it clipped somewhere it is not under your knee.

The honest costs: the magnets weaken with heavy daily use — expect a year or two, not forever — it is not waterproof, and at $18–25 it costs roughly double a basic treat tote for a build upgrade you may not care about. The cheaper version genuinely works: a folded-over sandwich bag of chopped chicken in a jacket pocket you have practised reaching into does the same job for nothing. What does not work is treats in a bag inside another bag, which is what most people are actually doing when they conclude their dog is not food motivated.

When to stop and buy stairs instead#

Two weeks of short sessions on a properly sized, properly stabilised ramp, with no lifting or pushing, and he is still refusing. That is enough. Stairs work for dogs that won't approach a ramp — typically because the ramp angle frightens them. The foam steps absorb impact when a senior dog descends, which is the moment that puts the most stress on front shoulders. Worth the price over plastic stairs.

Head-to-head with a ramp on the one axis that matters for a refusing dog: acceptance versus impact. Stairs win on acceptance because each step is a discrete, visible, committed decision rather than a continuous slope the dog has to trust in advance, and because most dogs already have a mental model for stairs. Stairs lose on impact, because every descent is a small controlled drop onto the front legs, and the front legs are the 60.4% end. High-density foam is the reason to pay more than plastic-stair money — it deforms under the landing where plastic does not — and it is not a small difference for a dog with elbow or shoulder pain.

Who should not buy these: a dog with a diagnosed forelimb problem, where you want to reduce front-end landings rather than schedule three of them per trip to the sofa. Also anyone short on floor space, since the wide footprint that stops them sliding on hardwood is the same footprint that makes them furniture. The foam compresses over years, the covers are washable but the foam core is not, and $95–225 is real money for something a set of $40 plastic steps superficially resembles.

Free alternative first, again: for a small dog and a couch, a firm ottoman or a stack of two cushions in a hard case is a step, and plenty of households never need to buy anything. For a bed, moving the mattress onto a lower frame is a one-time cost of an afternoon.

What to do this week#

Tonight: put the ramp flat on the living-room floor and scatter ten pieces of food along it. Do not call your dog. Just watch what he does. That single observation splits the five reasons into two groups and tells you whether you have a surface problem or a height problem, and it takes four minutes.

Tomorrow: measure the height of the thing he needs to climb, and find your ramp's length on the table above. If your number is over 30 degrees, stop training. You do not have a training problem.

This week: pick one target and one direction and train only that — down from a single step, ten minutes, ending on a success. Then check the tailgate habit nobody in your house has noticed: whether anyone is still letting him jump out because it is faster. That is the load the whole exercise exists to remove.

And be careful about how the story you tell yourself is shaped. A dog who used a ramp for a year and stopped did not become stubborn. Something happened — it moved under him, or someone hurried him, or it got steeper because you changed cars — and he learned. That is the expensive kind of lesson, because a dog who has decided a thing is unsafe does not experiment again to check. Preventing that costs one careful fortnight. Undoing it costs months, and in the meantime he is going back to jumping down.

The delay is the injury. With ramps, the delay hides inside something that looks like the opposite of neglect: you bought the equipment, so the problem is handled. The equipment sitting in the hallway unused is not the same as the problem being handled, and your dog cannot tell you which of the five reasons it is. That part is yours to work out.

Why won't my dog use the ramp?
Almost always one of five things, and they have different fixes: the surface feels untrustworthy under his nails; the incline is too steep for him to see a safe landing; the ramp moved or wobbled once and he has not forgotten; he was lifted, pushed, or dragged onto it and now the ramp predicts being handled; or he physically cannot do it, and the ramp is not the problem at all. Work out which one you have before you buy a different ramp — three of the five are free to fix with the ramp you already own.
How long does it take to train a dog to use a ramp?
Longer than most guides admit. The closest published figure comes from a formal protocol that acclimated working dogs to an unfamiliar moving, inclined surface — a treadmill — using food rewards and sessions capped at ten minutes. Dogs needed an average of 9.4 sessions to full acclimation, at two to three sessions a week over about five weeks, and one of the eight dogs never got there. A ramp is an easier task than that, but plan for a week or two of short daily sessions, not one afternoon.
What angle is too steep for a dog ramp?
There is no published veterinary threshold, so use geometry. A ramp needs to be about 2.4 times the height it climbs to sit at 25 degrees, and roughly 2.9 times to sit at 20 degrees. A 71-inch ramp to a 30-inch SUV floor is 25 degrees; the same 71-inch ramp to a 20-inch bed is 16 degrees; a 42-inch ramp to that same 30-inch SUV floor is 45.6 degrees, which is not a ramp, it is a slide. If your dog refuses at one end of your ramp and walks it happily flat on the floor, the angle is your answer.
Should I give up and get stairs instead?
Sometimes, and it is not a failure. Stairs are the right answer for a dog who has refused a properly sized, properly stabilised ramp across two weeks of short sessions, for a small dog reaching a bed or couch where a compliant ramp would need a five-foot footprint, and for a dog who has an established fear you would rather work around than through. Stairs cost you something real — each step is a small hop, and the descent lands on the front legs — so foam stairs beat plastic ones for a stiff dog.
Is it really that bad if my dog just jumps out of the car?
The measured version: fifteen healthy dogs jumping from a 0.75 metre platform, about the height of an SUV cargo floor, landed with a peak forelimb vertical ground reaction force of 34.12 N/kg — roughly 3.5 times body weight through the front limbs. Off a 0.55 metre sill, about a hatchback, it was 27.35 N/kg, or about 2.8 times. Those front limbs already carry a mean of 60.4% of a dog's mass standing still. That study measured loading, not injuries, so nobody can tell you the odds. But if you are going to reduce one repeated load in your dog's week, the jump down from the car is a good candidate.
Can I just lift my dog into the car instead?
For a small dog, yes, and it is the cheapest answer there is. For a dog over about 40 pounds it stops being sustainable — for your back, and because a stiff dog being hoisted by the ribs and hips is being handled in a way that can hurt, which is how you teach him to dread the tailgate. A dog you can no longer lift comfortably is a dog who needs either a ramp he trusts or a lifting harness with proper handles, not a daily wrestle at the bumper.
