Dasuquin vs GlycoFlex: The Answer Flips at 60 Pounds
GlycoFlex is now 'Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint.' For a big dog it costs two-thirds of Dasuquin, has no chondroitin, and its 41% claim traces to an unpublished 2006 pilot. Aug 2026.

Buy GlycoFlex — now sold as VetriScience Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint — if your dog is 61–100 lb and you want the most glucosamine and MSM per dollar with every milligram printed: one tablet a day, about $136 a year against Dasuquin's $207. (Above 100 lb the price advantage disappears — GlycoFlex's own chart goes to 1½ tablets, about $204 a year, for which you get 1,500 mg of glucosamine against the 900 mg Dasuquin specifies to the top of its chart at 120 lb. Same money, more actives, which is a different argument.) It is also the only one of the two whose maker is listed with the NASC — a voluntary trade programme, so read that as a small point in its favour rather than a mark against the other. Buy Dasuquin with MSM if your dog is 31–60 lb, where GlycoFlex's half-tablet maintenance dose gives less glucosamine rather than more (at 60 lb exactly, 500 mg against 900 mg, the widest the gap ever gets in Dasuquin's favour); if you want chondroitin and ASU in the same chew; or if your vet named it specifically. Be clear-eyed about what that costs. For a 55 lb dog it is about $217 a year against $68 — a $149 premium for 100 mg more glucosamine plus the chondroitin and ASU — and, in the other direction, 100 mg less MSM and none of the 300 mg of green-lipped mussel. That is also the only recommendation on this page we are paid for: we sell Dasuquin and we do not sell GlycoFlex. Buy neither until the dog's weight has been dealt with and you have written down what improvement would justify the money. Neither product has a published trial showing that it works. One of them has been through a blinded, placebo-controlled trial in dogs with real arthritis and failed to separate from placebo — which is not the same thing as the other one being better, because the other one has never been in a trial of that kind. What GlycoFlex has instead is a 2006 pilot in an induced-arthritis model that was never published, and that is the source of the 41% on the box.

First: the product you are looking for has been renamed#
If you went to re-order GlycoFlex 3 and could not find it, nothing has gone wrong. VetriScience has renamed the line. GlycoFlex Stage 3 is now "Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint," and GlycoFlex Plus is now "Ultimate Strength Healthy Hip & Joint."[9] The maker is unchanged: FoodScience, LLC.
Both names are live at the same time, and on one listing they are live in the same place. Checked 19 August 2026:
- The 120-count tablet, ASIN B002LVTTVM, is titled "VetriScience Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint for Dogs, Chicken, 120ct" and its first bullet reads "Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint (previously GlycoFlex Stage 3)."[1]
- The 60-count chew, ASIN B0015CV880, is titled "VetriScience Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint Chews for Dogs, 60 Count" — and then calls the product "Glycoflex" and "our GlycoFlex 3 canine formula" in its own bullets, two names on one page.[2]
There is a third listing you should know about before you shop this brand by name. ASIN B002LVTU20 is titled "VetriScience Healthy Hip & Joint Chews for Dogs, Chicken, 120 Count" at $37.07 — and every one of its five manufacturer bullets describes a cat product. "HIP & JOINT SUPPORT FOR CATS." "IDEAL FOR ADULT & SENIOR CATS." "Designed for adult and senior cats experiencing occasional stiffness, reduced jumping."[3] We are not telling you the wrong product ships. We are telling you that the listing's own copy cannot tell you what is in the tub, so if you land there, do not buy it on the title.
The rename matters for a practical reason beyond confusion: on Amazon a renamed listing keeps its old reviews, and this one has. You can check that yourself without trusting us: open B002LVTTVM's reviews and sort by oldest, and you are reading people who bought a box that said GlycoFlex Stage 3. Nobody who reviewed a GlycoFlex 3 box was reviewing a tub with today's title, and the listing gives you no way to tell whether the formula travelled with the name. We can show you today's panel in full, below. We cannot show you a pre-rename label, so we are not going to assert a continuity we have not verified: if you are re-ordering because the old box worked, compare the panel on your empty tub against the table below rather than trusting the "previously GlycoFlex Stage 3" line to mean that nothing changed.
The receipts, with a date on every cell#
Every number below was verified on 19 August 2026 — prices, sellers and listing copy through the Amazon Creators API; trial figures read from the full texts on Europe PMC. One provenance note you should have up front, because this page argues that provenance is the product: Dasuquin's panel and dosing chart come from Nutramax's own site, while GlycoFlex's come from a retailer reproducing VetriScience's panel verbatim, because VetriScience's own site is unreadable to every tool we have. That is a weaker source and we are not going to disguise it. "Not published" is an answer, not a blank.

Two of those rows are worth more than the rest, and neither is the price. They are the last two: the 41% claim and what is actually behind it, and the published trial that tested one of these products and did not find an effect. The rest of this page is those two rows, unpacked.

The 60 lb line, and why the answer flips there#
This is the part the two spec sheets never get placed side by side to show, and it is the whole decision.
Both makers dose by weight. Neither uses the same bands. VetriScience splits at 30, 60 and 100 lb; Nutramax splits its formula at 60 lb and its dosing at 30 and 60. The result is that the two products cross over, and the crossover sits right in the middle of the most common large-breed weight range.
VetriScience's chart, verbatim: initial period of 4–6 weeks — up to 30 lb, ½ tablet daily; 31–60 lb, 1 tablet daily; 61–100 lb, 2 tablets daily; over 100 lb, 2½ tablets daily. Maintenance — up to 30 lb, ½ tablet every other day; 31–60 lb, ½ tablet daily; 61–100 lb, 1 tablet daily; over 100 lb, 1½ tablets daily.[6]
Nutramax's chart, verbatim: 10–29 lb, 1 chew daily for 4–6 weeks then 1 every other day (small/medium tub); 30–59 lb, 2 chews daily then 1 daily (small/medium tub); 60–120 lb, 2 chews daily then 1 daily (large tub).[7]
Run a real dog through both. Here are the five actives that separate the two products, at the maintenance dose, with what they cost. Both panels carry more than this — GlycoFlex adds 100 mg of DMG (N,N-dimethylglycine HCl) and a small antioxidant block per tablet[6], Dasuquin adds Boswellia, green tea extract and a 90 mg omega-3 line per large chew[7] — and neither of those blocks is what the two products are argued about.

Read the two halves of that table against each other and the honest conclusion is uncomfortable for the cheap product. For a 55 lb dog, GlycoFlex costs under a third as much partly because it is giving less of what Dasuquin is built on — 100 mg less glucosamine, no chondroitin, no ASU. It is not a discount on the same thing. It is not a clean loss either, and we are not going to let the price framing hide that: even on the half tablet the 31–60 lb band prescribes, GlycoFlex still carries 500 mg of MSM against Dasuquin’s 400 mg, plus 300 mg of green-lipped mussel against Dasuquin’s none. For a 70 lb dog, the picture reverses on those five rows: more glucosamine, more MSM, plus 600 mg of an ingredient Dasuquin does not contain, for two-thirds the price. Dasuquin still holds three actives GlycoFlex has nothing against — chondroitin, ASU and the Boswellia/green-tea/omega-3 block — so this is a trade, not a rout.
Your dog does not change at sixty pounds. The label does. If he is hovering near that line, weigh him properly on the practice scales before you decide, because a two-pound difference moves him between two tubs with different economics — and the same is true inside the Dasuquin range, where the 60 lb formula split makes the smaller dog the more expensive one to feed.
One more line item, and it is the one most likely to catch you out: for every weight band costed on this page, both labels prescribe a doubled dose for the first four to six weeks. (One exception, in the band this page has already singled out: over 100 lb, GlycoFlex’s chart runs 2½ tablets then 1½, which is a loading dose of two-thirds more rather than double.) A 70 lb dog's first six weeks cost $31 on GlycoFlex and $48 on Dasuquin, not $16 and $24. Our dosing-by-weight reference runs that arithmetic for every brand we cover, including the several whose bottle does not survive its own loading phase. A 120-tablet GlycoFlex bottle gives a 70 lb dog 60 days at the loading dose; an 84-count Dasuquin tub gives a 55 lb dog exactly 42 days, which is the six-week maximum with not one chew spare.
The 41% claim, and the study underneath it#
VetriScience markets this line on a number: hind leg strength up to 41% better in four weeks. It is the most persuasive claim either brand makes, because it is the only one that sounds like it came off an instrument: Dasuquin's headline — "The #1 Joint Health Supplement BRAND Recommended By Veterinarians", asterisked on its own homepage to "a survey conducted among small animal veterinarians," with no name, date or link for that survey[24] — is a statement about what vets recommend, not a measurement of what happened to any dog.
There is a real study under it, and it is not what the sentence on the label suggests. We went and read it.
It is a pilot study in an induced-arthritis model, and the maker's own summary of it does not say "hind leg strength." The source is Martinez et al., The effects of Glyco FLEX 3 on a stable stifle osteoarthritis model in dogs: a pilot study, Washington State University, 2006, presented at NAVC in 2007 — reproduced in VetriScience's own research compendium, which we read in full on 19 August 2026. Four things in that summary matter, and all four come from the company's document rather than from any critic of it:[22]
- The 41% is a 41% increase in peak vertical force — the force-plate measure — not a strength test. The same summary reports a 44% increase in vertical impulse.
- It is a change "over the pre-treatment value," i.e. each dog against its own baseline, not against the control arm.
- It belongs to "the responders" — a subgroup, named as such in the maker's own sentence — not to the dogs as a whole.
- The summary states no sample size and no dose. On the one document the company publishes about the study it sells on, the two numbers you would need to weigh it are absent.
And the part of the pilot that runs against our framing, which belongs here rather than in a footnote: the same summary reports a significant decrease in mean synovial PGE2 and soluble collagen in the treatment group as compared to the control group — a genuine between-group result, and the strongest thing in the study. It is a biochemical marker in an induced model rather than a dog walking better, but it is not nothing, and it is not what the 41% is about.
In fairness, the same page contradicts itself: the caption on the force-plate chart in the same section reads "Treatment dogs showed a 41% increase in peak vertical force after 4 weeks" — assigning the number to the treated dogs rather than to the responders among them. One document, two different populations for one figure, and the marketing took the broader of the two.
The design is a randomised, double-blind crossover in what the compendium's body calls "a stifle osteoarthritis (OA) model", and its title "a stable stifle osteoarthritis model in dogs" — that is, arthritis produced for the experiment rather than arrived at by living. The compendium does not say how the model was produced; the lawsuit below alleges it was surgical and chemical, which we report as its allegation rather than as fact. Either way an induced model is the right way to test a mechanism and the wrong way to predict what happens to an eleven-year-old Labrador with naturally occurring arthritis, and the distance between those two things is not a technicality.
A pending lawsuit puts numbers on the subgroup, and we report it as an allegation. A consumer class action filed in the Eastern District of New York on 5 September 2024 alleges the study ran in seven dogs "subjected to an artificial, surgical and chemically induced" model, that only three of the seven improved significantly, and that the 41% is the average across those three.[23] Those figures are the plaintiff's characterisation and have not been tested in court; we could not establish the case's current status without PACER access. We are telling you it exists because the direction of it is consistent with the one sentence the maker itself published — "the responders" — and because you are entitled to weigh a contested claim knowing it is contested.
We cannot tell you what is on the box in the shop today. The complaint below reproduces packaging carrying the claim, but that is a 2024 filing describing boxes printed before the rename, so it settles what was on the old box and not what is on the new one — and the two live surfaces we can read disagree about which formula the number belongs to.
What we can show you is where the claim sits, which is stranger than it first appears. On 19 August 2026:
- Amazon's manufacturer copy for Ultimate Strength Healthy Hip & Joint (previously GlycoFlex Plus) reads: "Clinically Tested Joint Support for Dogs: Ultimate Strength Healthy Hip & Joint was shown to increase hind-leg strength and mobility by up to 41% in just 4 weeks."[9]
- A retailer reproducing VetriScience's copy attaches the same 41% to Extra Strength — a genuinely different formula — and carries it on its Ultimate Strength page too, so on that retailer the one percentage is printed on both formulas at once. Extra Strength is 1,000 mg glucosamine, 1,000 mg MSM, 600 mg Perna and no chondroitin; Ultimate Strength is 800 mg glucosamine, 500 mg MSM, 300 mg Perna and 250 mg chondroitin. One percentage, and the four actives it would have to be about — glucosamine, MSM, mussel and chondroitin — differ on every line. (The two panels do agree on the small antioxidant block: vitamin E 50 IU, manganese 10 mg, selenium 0.002 mg.)[20][6]
- The Extra Strength Amazon listing itself carries no percentage at all. One limit on that sentence, because it is the kind we would print about a manufacturer. The title we quote is the title the Amazon Creators API returns, which is the surface every Amazon figure on this page comes from: "VetriScience Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint for Dogs, Chicken, 120ct", re-pulled at publication. Amazon's rendered retail page can carry marketing text in the title that the API's title field does not, and Amazon blocks automated reads of that page, so we cannot tell you what the title looks like in your browser. If you open the listing and find a clinical claim there that is not in the line above, that is a discrepancy between Amazon's two surfaces, and it is worth more than our sentence.[1]
So one figure is attached to two formulas that are not the same product, and omitted from the surface where one of them is actually sold. A clinical result belongs to the thing that was tested. If Ultimate Strength was tested, Extra Strength does not inherit the number; if Extra Strength was tested, the Ultimate Strength bullet is describing someone else's result.
Then the literature, which is where the shape of this becomes clear. A conference presentation is not a journal article, and it does not get indexed like one. Europe PMC searches on 19 August 2026 for GlycoFlex OR "Glyco-Flex" OR VetriScience, and separately for "hind leg strength" AND dog, returned 8 records and 1 record respectively, and no study of this product line — a handful of unrelated papers that happen to contain the words, and, for the second query, a single mid-century paper about the canine esophagus. Both counts were re-run through the Europe PMC REST API at publication and returned identically, which is why we print them; the search page in a browser gives a different-looking result and the API is the reproducible surface. That is the expected result for work presented at a veterinary conference in 2007 and never entering the indexed literature. We cannot prove a negative, and this group did publish adjacent work — the same compendium records a companion chondrocyte study from it in a journal. What we can tell you is that after twenty years we cannot find a peer-reviewed publication of this pilot, and neither can the databases.[10]
And VetriScience's own website — where the citation would live if it lives anywhere — returns HTTP 405 to every automated request we have made, on 16 August and again on 19 August. Its product pages are visible to a person in a browser and closed to every tool that would let a claim be checked at scale. We are reporting that as a finding rather than a complaint: on a page selling a clinical percentage, an unreadable source is part of the product.
So the honest reading is narrower than either the label or the lawsuit. A 2006 pilot in an induced model found a between-group drop in two inflammatory markers, and found that the dogs who responded improved on a force plate against their own baselines — and nobody has published a peer-reviewed trial of this product in dogs with naturally occurring arthritis in the twenty years since. That is a reason to try it, if you want to. It is not a reason to believe a percentage. Do not let the 41% decide anything — it was never a measurement of what would happen to your dog.
What the evidence actually says about each product's headline ingredient#
Here is the asymmetry that decides how you should read all of the above, and it runs against the cheaper product's marketing and the expensive product's price at the same time.
Dasuquin with MSM has been in a blinded trial, and it did not separate from placebo. In a prospective, block-randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of 75 owned pet dogs with hip osteoarthritis, one arm received the product the paper names as "DASUQUIN® with MSM Soft Chews, Nutramax Laboratories Consumer Care, Inc." dosed at 30 mg/kg of glucosamine daily for six weeks. Measured on a force plate, the glucosamine arm's week-4 change in peak vertical force was −0.05 ± 6.34 against placebo's +0.08 ± 1.90. Two marine oil arms — EAB-277 (+4.17) and PCSO-524 (+3.90) — were significantly greater than both placebo and glucosamine at week 4; carprofen (+3.08) rose significantly over its own pre-treatment value at week 4 but did not clear placebo until week 6. On that last clause the paper disagrees with itself, and we are following its Results section rather than its abstract: the abstract states that the carprofen increase at four weeks was itself "significantly greater than placebo," which the Results tables do not bear out. We have taken the more conservative of the paper's two readings, and we would rather tell you which one we took than pick one silently.[11] Two caveats we always carry with that result: the arms were small — 16 dogs in the glucosamine group and 14 to 15 in the others, after 10 of the 85 enrolled dogs dropped out — and the trial ran roughly the maintenance dose through the six-week window this label says to double. That is a null result in a small trial at a low dose, which is weaker than "it does not work" and a great deal stronger than nothing.
One more thing belongs on the record here, and it cuts against the arms that won rather than the one that lost. This paper carries a published corrigendum, issued 2 August 2023, whose entire content is a correction to the funding statement: the trial was funded not by VetzPetz Asia but by Pharmalink International Ltd — the company behind the two marine-oil products that beat both placebo and glucosamine in it.[26] The authors state the funder had no role in the design, analysis or decision to publish, and the correction changes none of the numbers. It does not weaken the finding we are leaning on, which is the arm that did not move. We print it because a page that scrutinises a manufacturer's study should scrutinise the study it likes.
That is one trial, and one trial on a supplement is thin evidence for anything. So note that a different group at a different institution reached the same answer with a different instrument: a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of a glucosamine/chondroitin product in 60 client-owned dogs, 30 per arm, run for 97 days and measured with continuously worn activity monitors rather than a force plate, found no difference in daily activity counts — while owner-reported pain scores improved in both arms with no difference between them, which the authors attributed to caregiver placebo.[25] Different group, different instrument, different duration, same result. That study did not name Dasuquin, so it does not extend the finding above to this product by name; what it does is make the force-plate null harder to write off as one bad trial.
GlycoFlex has never been in one — but its distinguishing ingredient has. Green-lipped mussel powder is the thing GlycoFlex has that Dasuquin does not, and in 2009 a randomised, double-blinded, double-controlled trial in 45 dogs with radiographically confirmed hip or elbow osteoarthritis ran freeze-dried Perna canaliculus against carprofen and against placebo for eight weeks. The paper reports two separate analyses and they should not be blended. On the proportion of dogs who improved, the mussel group beat placebo on the vet-assessed mobility index (66.7% against 26.7%, P = 0.031, odds ratio 5.5, 95% CI 1.14–26.41), the owner chronic pain index (P = 0.028, OR 6.0) and the owner pain visual analogue scale (P = 0.011, OR 8.0, 95% CI 1.52–42.04). On the extent of improvement, two of those held: vet-assessed mobility at P = 0.012 and pain VAS at P = 0.004, with locomotion VAS close at P = 0.057.[12]
Now the part of that paper the supplement industry never quotes. The same trial also measured two force-plate variables, and neither separated from placebo: peak vertical force P = 0.264 by proportion improved and P = 0.201 by extent, odds ratio 2.50 (95% CI 0.52–11.93); vertical impulse P = 0.277 and P = 0.123, odds ratio 2.40 (95% CI 0.52–10.99).[12] Everything that moved was something a human being scored. Nothing that moved was something a machine measured. That is not a reason to dismiss the result — a dog's pain is partly a thing humans observe, and carprofen's force-plate result cleared placebo on the proportion of dogs improved (P = 0.031), so the instrument was working. It is a reason to hold the finding at the size it actually is.
And then the dose. That trial gave dogs of 40 kg or less four 500 mg capsules a day for ten days and two a day afterwards — 2,000 mg loading, 1,000 mg maintenance.[12] A 70 lb dog on GlycoFlex's maintenance tablet gets 600 mg. A 55 lb dog on half a tablet gets 300 mg. Different preparation, so the milligrams are not strictly interchangeable, and we will not pretend otherwise. But the direction is unambiguous: the shelf product delivers a fraction of the amount the trial used, and nobody has tested the fraction.
The most recently published synthesis is blunter than either brand — with one caveat you need before you weigh it. A 2025 review in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science surveyed the disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs — chondroitin among them — against the outcome measures the European Medicines Agency prescribes, but took glucosamine and pentosan polysulfate together as its special focus, and concluded of that pair: "both GlcN and PPS have shown an inconsistent efficacy in decreasing pain, improving joint function and retarding the progression of OA although they demonstrate excellent safety profile. The current evidence is relatively weak to suggest a therapeutic value." Pentosan polysulfate is an injectable that has nothing to do with either tub on this page, so read that verdict as covering glucosamine among two agents rather than glucosamine alone.[13]
Here is the caveat, and it is the kind we would print about a manufacturer, so we print it about a journal. That review was published in 2025, but its own Methodology section states that its Medline search was bounded to publications dated 1 January 2000 through 31 December 2013.[13] So it is the most recently published synthesis, not a synthesis of the most recent evidence, and its window closes a decade before the 2023 force-plate trial above. Its verdict on the older literature stands. It does not speak to anything published since 2013, in either direction.
The most-cited positive canine trial, McCarthy 2007, found significant improvement in pain, weight-bearing and severity by day 70 in 35 dogs — but it was positive-controlled against carprofen with no placebo arm at all, which is precisely the design that cannot separate a working supplement from a hopeful household.[14]

Which brings us to the sentence this whole page is really about. One of these two products went into a blinded, placebo-controlled trial in dogs with real arthritis, and failed. The other has never been in one. GlycoFlex has a 2006 pilot in an induced arthritis model, unpublished and reported in responders only; Dasuquin has a 2023 peer-reviewed trial in pet dogs that named it, measured it carefully, and found nothing. It is very easy to read that as a point in GlycoFlex's favour, and it is not one. A maker whose only study is an unpublished pilot in an induced model can never be named in a null result, because the test that could produce one has not been run. Silence is not a clean record; it is an absence of record, and the market quietly rewards it.

Who should buy neither#
“Because your dog can't tell you how much pain he or she is in.”
Five honest disqualifications, and the first one is the reason this section exists.
- Anyone buying a supplement instead of an appointment. This is the failure mode that costs the most and looks the most responsible. A tub is something you can do tonight; a referral is a phone call you keep meaning to make. Nobody ever decides to delay the diagnosis. It just becomes what happened, one $45 tub at a time, and the months in between are the part that cannot be bought back. If your dog is limping, stiff when he first gets up, or has stopped doing something he used to do, read the arthritis explainer and book the appointment. Buy the tub afterwards, on advice.
- Anyone whose dog is overweight. Body condition is the one lever here with a lifetime controlled canine study behind it, and it is free. In a lifetime paired-feeding study of 48 Labradors, dogs fed 25% less than their littermates had radiographic hip osteoarthritis at eight years in 3 of 21 cases against 15 of 22 in the control-fed group.[16] Nothing on this page competes with that.
- Any dog on a shellfish elimination diet — and this disqualifies both. GlycoFlex prints its source on the panel: "Glucosamine HCl (Shrimp and Crab)", plus 600 mg of green-lipped mussel. Dasuquin's panel names glucosamine hydrochloride without stating what it was made from, and we are not going to tell you it is shellfish-free on the strength of an omission. The difference between the two products here is disclosure, not safety: VetriScience prints the source and Nutramax does not. If your dog is on an elimination diet, that question goes to the vet running it, about both tubs.
- Anyone who will not measure. Both labels ask for four to six weeks before you judge. In a blinded trial of dogs with osteoarthritis, owners scoring their own dogs reported improvement 39.7% of the time while the dog was on a placebo — while on the force plate, of those 58 placebo dogs, 46 were unchanged, 7 improved by 5% or more and 5 got worse.[15] That is a response rate rather than an effect size, but the implication for you is direct: roughly two owners in five reported improvement in a dog receiving nothing — and while 7 of those 58 dogs did measurably improve, most of that reported improvement had nothing under it. You are about to make exactly that judgement about a $136-to-$217 purchase. Write down three specific things — how long to stand up, how far into the walk the pace drops, which stair he stops at — before the first dose. - Anyone who needs the 41% to mean what it sounds like. It is a within-dog force-plate change in the subgroup that responded, in dogs whose arthritis was produced for the experiment, in an unpublished 2006 pilot. If that number is doing the work in your decision, the decision has nothing under it.

Where to buy — and the honest limit on that advice. For both reference SKUs above, the Amazon buy box on 19 August 2026 was held by Amazon.com itself, so there is no reseller markup on either. What we cannot give you is a channel comparison. Nutramax does not sell Dasuquin direct — we re-checked its own store on 16 August 2026 and found 17 products, all Cosequin, no Dasuquin[21] — so Amazon is the only US price for it that exists to compare against. And VetriScience's store returns HTTP 405 to every tool we have, so we could not read its direct prices today at all. Treat "cheapest on Amazon" as unproven in both directions rather than as our finding. Separately, on the GlycoFlex 60-count chew and the Ultimate Strength SKU the buy box was held by the reseller "Pattern." rather than by Amazon (the Ultimate Strength page also showed an Amazon.com offer with one unit left),[9] which matters for the next paragraph.
The guarantee is the sharpest practical difference between these two companies, and it favours the cheaper one. VetriScience publishes a 60-day satisfaction guarantee, void for products bought from unauthorised sellers.[18] That term was read on VetriScience's own guarantee page on 12 August 2026 and we could not re-read it today, because the site returns HTTP 405 to every tool we have. We cannot tell you which Amazon sellers count as authorised — that list is not on the page we read, and a guarantee whose exclusion you are unable to check is worth less than one you can. Confirm it with the company before you let it decide anything. Nutramax published no satisfaction guarantee at all when we read its return policy on 10 August: report within 10 business days of receipt, and between 10 and 30 business days a return is accepted only if the product is unopened, unmarked, undamaged and has a year left before expiry.[19] We could not re-read that policy today either — the URL now redirects to an error page — so both halves of this comparison rest on terms read earlier this month rather than this morning, and the one that reads worse for the product we earn on is the one you should confirm hardest. The label asks for a four-to-six-week trial. Those two facts do not fit together, and the smaller tub is the cheaper way to find out whether your dog is a responder.
The seal. FoodScience, LLC appears on the National Animal Supplement Council's primary supplier list under that name; Nutramax appears on neither the primary nor the preferred list, checked against all 240 primary-supplier entries and all 152 preferred-supplier entries on 19 August 2026.[8] Be precise about what that buys. To carry the seal a company must hold written production SOPs, run an adverse-event reporting system, comply with NASC labelling guidelines including FDA CVM caution statements, submit to random product testing by an independent lab to ensure products meet label claim, and take annual NASC training. The page makes no claim about efficacy at all.[17] So the seal is evidence that the tub probably contains what the panel says. It is not evidence that the contents help — and Nutramax's absence from the list is not evidence that its tubs are mislabelled. Membership is voluntary; declining to join a trade programme is not a finding about a product. Separately, VetriScience's own listing copy says its supplements "routinely undergo third-party testing" while naming no lab and publishing no certificate[1] — a phrase we have removed from our own product copy elsewhere for exactly that reason, and one that should not be confused with the NASC testing above, which is a different programme with a published requirement.

The joint supplement to buy when you have decided to buy one and the dog has real, diagnosed osteoarthritis. The ASU component is what separates it from Cosequin and the only reason to pay the premium, and the honest framing is that the supporting evidence is strongest in the laboratory and weakest in blinded canine trials — which is true of the entire category. Buy one product, run it properly for 4–6 weeks, and judge the result against something you measured before you started. Score lowered 9.2 to 8.8 on 2026-08-13: the product has not changed, but we read the trial that tested it by name and found it did not separate from placebo on a force plate, and a second blinded trial by a different group using activity monitors reached the same answer. It stays a defensible first purchase because it is inexpensive, well tolerated and unusually well disclosed. It is no longer a product we can describe as well evidenced.

- The canine clinical evidence for ASU is thinner than the marketing: the strongest data is laboratory and animal-model work, not blinded trials in pet dogs. No joint supplement has evidence in the same class as an NSAID
- This exact product was the glucosamine arm of a blinded, placebo-controlled force-plate trial and it did not separate from placebo. Kampa et al. 2023 (Front Vet Sci, DOI 10.3389/fvets.2023.1033188) names "DASUQUIN with MSM Soft Chews, Nutramax" and reports a week-4 change in peak vertical force of −0.05 against placebo's +0.08, while two green-lipped mussel lipid extracts and carprofen all improved significantly. Two fair caveats: small arms — 16 dogs in the glucosamine group, 14 to 15 in the others — and the trial ran maintenance dosing (about 30 mg/kg) through the window this label says to double.
- Contains no manganese, unlike both of its Nutramax siblings — Cosequin prints 3 mg per tablet and Dasuquin Advanced prints 3 mg per large-dog chew, while this tier has no manganese row on the panel and none in the other-ingredients list (all three panels read 19 August 2026). Whether that matters is genuinely unclear, since manganese's role here is a cofactor claim rather than a tested effect. We list it as a con because the maker sells it as an active in the tier above and the buyer of this tier is never told it is absent
- No calorie figure on the panel, on dasuquin.com or on the Amazon listing (verified absent 19 August 2026) — two chews a day is two treats a day for a dog whose weight is the strongest lever anyone has
We carry Dasuquin and we do not carry GlycoFlex, which is why this page recommends GlycoFlex for the 61–100 lb dog and earns nothing when you take that advice. Dasuquin earns its place on this site for a narrower reason than its marketing claims: it is the tub where a vet's instruction, a printed panel and a published trial all point at the same object, so if your vet said "Dasuquin," you can buy exactly the thing they meant, check every milligram, and read the one study that tested it. For a dog between 31 and 60 lb it also carries more of the three actives it is built on — 100 mg more glucosamine, plus the chondroitin and ASU GlycoFlex does not have at any dose. Not, to be exact about our own table, more of everything: the half tablet that band prescribes still beats it on MSM, 500 mg to 400, and carries 300 mg of green-lipped mussel that Dasuquin does not contain.
What it is bad at is now well documented: at maintenance it costs about $207 a year for a 70 lb dog against GlycoFlex's $136; the return window cannot accommodate the trial its own label prescribes; and it was the arm that did not move in the only blinded, placebo-controlled force-plate trial that has tested this product by name. The cheaper thing comes first regardless of which tub you choose — weight, then a written baseline, then a supplement. What to do this week#
- Weigh the dog properly — practice scales, not an estimate. Sixty pounds is a real boundary on both labels and a guess can put you on the wrong tub.
- Read the panel on the tub you already own. Check two things: which weight band your dog falls in on that label, and whether you are still inside the four-to-six-week initial period, because both makers ask for a bigger dose there — double, in every band this page costs out, and 2½ tablets rather than 1½ if your dog is over 100 lb on GlycoFlex — and it is the easiest instruction in the aisle to miss. That correction costs nothing.
- Write down three specific things before the first dose, with today's date and a review date six weeks out.
- If anything on that list is worsening rather than plateauing, make the appointment first. A supplement is a reasonable thing to try on a diagnosed joint. It is a bad way to find out whether the joint is the problem.
The months before a diagnosis are the expensive ones, and the supplement aisle is where a lot of them get spent — not because anyone chose to wait, but because buying something feels enough like acting that nobody notices the decision was never made. Set the review date. Then the six weeks are a trial, and not a delay.

- Is GlycoFlex as good as Dasuquin?
- It depends entirely on how much your dog weighs, because the two makers cut their weight bands in different places. For a dog of 61–100 lb, one GlycoFlex tablet a day at maintenance delivers 1,000 mg of glucosamine and 1,000 mg of MSM for about $136 a year, against Dasuquin's 900 mg and 800 mg for about $207 — more of both actives for two-thirds the money. For a dog of 31–60 lb, which is where VetriScience's own chart cuts the band, GlycoFlex's maintenance dose drops to half a tablet, which is 500 mg of glucosamine against Dasuquin's 600 mg, so the cheaper product is now also the smaller dose. Note the boundaries do not line up: at exactly 60 lb VetriScience still has the dog on half a tablet while Nutramax has already moved him to the large tub at 900 mg, which is the widest the gap ever gets in Dasuquin's favour. It runs the other way at the top of the range: over 100 lb GlycoFlex's chart calls for 1½ tablets, 1,500 mg against the 900 mg Dasuquin's chart specifies up to 120 lb, at about the same daily cost. Above 120 lb Nutramax's label states no dose at all, so anything you read for a dog that size is somebody's extrapolation, including ours. GlycoFlex contains no chondroitin at any size and no ASU; Dasuquin contains both. Neither product has a published trial showing it works. Prices and panels verified 19 August 2026.
- Why can't I find GlycoFlex 3 anymore?
- It has been renamed, not discontinued. VetriScience now sells GlycoFlex Stage 3 as 'Extra Strength Healthy Hip & Joint' and GlycoFlex Plus as 'Ultimate Strength Healthy Hip & Joint.' Both names are live at once — on 19 August 2026 the 120-count tablet listing (ASIN B002LVTTVM) carried the new name in its title and the old one in a bullet reading 'previously GlycoFlex Stage 3,' while the 60-count chew listing (B0015CV880) carried the new name in its title and still called the product 'GlycoFlex 3' twice in its own bullets. Same maker, FoodScience LLC. If you liked the old box, check the panel rather than the name — the panel is what did or did not change.
- What is the 41% hind leg strength claim about?
- There is a real study behind it, and it does not say what the label says. It is Martinez et al., a 2006 Washington State University pilot study in an induced stifle osteoarthritis model, presented at NAVC 2007. We can find no peer-reviewed publication of it, and neither can the literature databases, which is consistent with conference work that never went to a journal. In VetriScience's own published summary, read 19 August 2026, the 41% is a 41% increase in peak vertical force on a force plate, in 'the responders' only, measured against each dog's own pre-treatment value rather than against the control group. That summary states no sample size and no dose. A consumer class action filed in the Eastern District of New York on 5 September 2024 (Kelly v. FoodScience, 1:24-cv-06222) alleges the study ran in seven dogs and that only three improved, with the 41% being the average of those three; those allegations are unproven. So the number is real, and it is not a measurement of hind leg strength in a normal arthritic dog. On 19 August 2026 the claim appeared in Amazon's own manufacturer copy for Ultimate Strength Healthy Hip & Joint — 'shown to increase hind-leg strength and mobility by up to 41% in just 4 weeks' — while a retailer reproducing VetriScience's copy attached the same 41% to the different Extra Strength formula, and the Extra Strength Amazon listing carried no percentage at all. Europe PMC REST API searches the same day returned 8 records for GlycoFlex OR "Glyco-Flex" OR VetriScience and 1 record for "hind leg strength" AND dog, and no study of this product line in either. Quote the hyphenated term: run without the quotation marks the first query tokenises and returns 408 unrelated records instead of 8. The study was run on Glyco FLEX 3 — the formula now sold as Extra Strength — so the retailer that attaches the number to Extra Strength has it right, and the Amazon bullet attaching it to Ultimate Strength is describing a different product's result. VetriScience's own website returns HTTP 405 to every automated request we have made, on 16 and 19 August, so none of this could be read on the maker's main site; the research compendium we used sits on the older glycoflex.com domain.
- Does GlycoFlex have chondroitin?
- The Extra Strength tablets — the ones that compete with Dasuquin on price — contain none. The panel is glucosamine HCl 1,000 mg, MSM 1,000 mg, Perna canaliculus 600 mg, DMG 100 mg, and a small antioxidant block, with no chondroitin line at any dose. The only chondroitin in the range sits in the Ultimate Strength (previously GlycoFlex Plus) formula, whose panel is glucosamine 800 mg, MSM 500 mg, chondroitin 250 mg and Perna canaliculus 300 mg per tablet — so it adds chondroitin and halves the green-lipped mussel. Dasuquin with MSM carries 350 mg of chondroitin per large-dog chew and 250 mg per small-to-medium chew. Whether chondroitin matters is a fair question for your vet. A 2025 review in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science surveyed the disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs, chondroitin among them, but took glucosamine and pentosan polysulfate together as its special focus, and called the current evidence for that pair 'relatively weak' — though that review's own Medline search was bounded to 2000 through 2013, so it speaks to the older literature only.
- Which is cheaper for a 70 lb dog?
- GlycoFlex, by about $71 a year. At $44.81 for 120 tablets, verified 19 August 2026, a 61–100 lb dog on the label's maintenance dose of one tablet a day runs $0.37 a day, roughly $136 a year. Dasuquin with MSM for large dogs is $84.99 for 150 chews, one chew a day at maintenance, so $0.57 a day and roughly $207 a year. Both figures are maintenance only; both labels prescribe a doubled dose for the first four to six weeks, which costs twice as much for that period.
