French Bulldog Joint Problems: What Actually Goes Wrong, and When
A French Bulldog's orthopedic trouble usually arrives from the spine, not the legs — and it arrives young. The verified numbers, the age timeline, and what screening paperwork does and doesn't tell you.

Almost everything that goes orthopedically wrong with a French Bulldog goes wrong in the spine, and it goes wrong young — median age three and a half years in the largest recent referral series. The legs are a distant second, and the thing owners watch for hardest, a limp, is the sign this breed is least likely to give you. Learn the spinal warning signs instead: wobbling, scuffed back paws, a yelp when picked up, a dog that will not turn his neck. And if your Frenchie ever cannot use his back legs, that is an emergency tonight, not an appointment next week.

What is a French Bulldog actually built out of?#
Start with the tail, because it explains the spine.
The corkscrew tail is not a decoration. It is a run of malformed vertebrae, and it comes from a specific genetic variant. A whole-genome study across 100 dogs identified a frameshift mutation in the gene DVL2 as the variant most strongly associated with the screw-tail phenotype, and reported that this variant was fixed in Bulldogs and French Bulldogs — meaning every dog in those breeds carried it — with an allele frequency of 0.94 in Boston Terriers. It segregated with thoracic and caudal vertebral malformations in a recessive manner, with complete penetrance for the caudal (tail) malformations in all three breeds and incomplete, variable penetrance for the thoracic ones, ranging from 45.5% in Boston Terriers to 100% in Bulldogs.[1]
That is the honest version of the screw-tail story, and it is more careful than the version that circulates. The tail and the malformed chest vertebrae come out of the same variant. The paper does not say that a tighter tail predicts a worse spine in an individual dog, and neither will we.
The second piece of the build is chondrodystrophy — the same short-legged gene package that defines the Dachshund. It comes from a retrogene copy of FGF4 on chromosome 12, and it changes disc chemistry, not just leg length. In dogs, that retrogene acts in a dominant fashion to lower the age of onset and raise the overall risk of disc disease, with odds ratios for disc surgery running from 5.5 to 15.1 in the breeds where it segregates.[5] In French Bulldogs it is close to universal: among 81 screened Finnish French Bulldogs, 74% were homozygous, 21% heterozygous and 5% wild-type, an allele frequency of 0.85.[4]
So: a dog carrying a variant that malforms vertebrae, stacked on a variant that hardens discs, on a heavy, wide-chested, short-legged frame. Then add the third thing, which is the flat face — and the flat face is not only an airway issue. In a survey of 574 German French Bulldog owners, having a shorter nose was significantly associated with hemivertebrae and with intervertebral disc disease, alongside the expected breathing problems.[11] The face and the back are not separate purchases. They came in the same package.
What does this breed actually get, in order of likelihood?#
Here is the ranking that matters, and it will surprise anyone who came here expecting an arthritis article.
1. Acute disc extrusion in the spine. In 439 French Bulldogs referred for spinal disease between them carrying 448 diagnoses, acute intervertebral disc extrusion was 84.3% of diagnoses. In pugs seen at the same centres it was 6.4%.[7] In an earlier series of 343 French Bulldogs presented for any neurological problem at all, Hansen type I disc herniation was 45.5% of every case and 70.3% of all spinal cord disease.[6] Owner-reported figures are lower but still substantial: 18% of 574 German French Bulldogs.[11]
2. Hemivertebrae — extremely common, usually silent. When 62 neurologically normal French Bulldogs were imaged alongside pugs and English Bulldogs, 80.7% of all the neurologically normal dogs had at least one vertebral malformation, and hemivertebrae were present in 93.5% of the French Bulldogs.[2] A follow-up counted 243 individual hemivertebrae across 58 neurologically normal French Bulldogs — about four malformed vertebrae per dog, in dogs with nothing wrong with them.[3]
3. Patellar luxation — the commonest true limb problem. In UK primary-care records for 2016, 2.0% of 2,781 French Bulldogs were diagnosed with patellar luxation in a single year, with adjusted odds of 2.31 (95% CI 1.68–3.17, P<0.001) against non-French Bulldogs.[8] An earlier study of 210,824 dogs, where overall prevalence was 1.30%, put the French Bulldog at 5.4 times the odds of crossbred dogs (95% CI 3.1–9.3, P<0.001).[9]
4. Everything else, including hips. Spinal arachnoid diverticulum was 11.3% of the French series;[6] caudal articular process dysplasia, transitional vertebrae and cranial thoracic vertebral canal stenosis are all documented in these breeds and all occur commonly in dogs with no signs.[12] Hip dysplasia is discussed below, and the short version is that we could not verify a prevalence figure for it in this breed.

Now the finding that should reorganise how you read your own dog. In that same UK primary-care study, French Bulldogs were recorded with lameness less often than other dogs — 0.6% of them, adjusted odds 0.26 (95% CI 0.15–0.42, P<0.001) — while spinal cord disorders ran at 1.1% with adjusted odds of 3.00 (95% CI 1.94–4.64, P<0.001).[8]
Read that twice. A French Bulldog in orthopedic trouble is less likely to limp than an average dog, and three times more likely to have something wrong with his spinal cord. If you are watching this breed for a limp, you are watching the wrong thing. When does it show up?#
This is the section nobody writes for this breed, and it is the one that changes what you do.

The number to carry out of that table is 44 months. Owners of this breed brace for old age. The spine does not wait for it.

What does the first week of trouble look like in this breed specifically?#
Generic advice says watch for limping. In a French Bulldog, that advice is close to useless, and the data above is why.
What a first episode actually looks like:
- A yelp on being picked up, particularly if you lift under the chest or armpits. In a breed where 39.8% of disc herniations were cervical and C3–C4 alone was 57.8% of those,[6] a neck that hurts when handled is a leading sign, and it is one owners routinely file under "he's being dramatic."
- A dog who will not turn his head to follow you, and turns his whole body instead. Frenchies are expressive dogs; a sudden loss of head movement is loud if you know to look for it.
- Back paws scuffing on pavement, or nail tips worn flat on top. That is neurological, not lazy.
- A wobble on turns rather than a limp — the back end swinging wide, or the dog sitting down mid-walk.
- Refusing the sofa he jumped on yesterday. In this breed, treat a sudden refusal as information rather than as a training regression.
For the leg problems, the picture is different and gentler. Patellar luxation in a French Bulldog most often shows up as a brief skip — the dog hops for two or three strides on a back leg, then carries on as if nothing happened. It is easy to miss and easy to dismiss. Researchers who tracked three-dimensional patellar motion in French Bulldogs with and without medial luxation found that in affected dogs the patella sat significantly more distally at touch-down (p = 0.037) and significantly more medially at midswing (p = 0.045), and attributed the mechanism to the stifle sitting far from a straight fore-and-aft plane because of the breed's broad trunk and wide pelvis.[10] That was seven dogs, which is a small study and we will not pretend otherwise. But the conformational logic — wide chest, wide pelvis, knees that point outward — is the same logic that explains the rest of this page.

Screening, and what a breeder's paperwork actually tells you#
This is where a lot of money changes hands on the strength of documents that do not mean what buyers think they mean.
Spinal radiographs. A chest X-ray showing hemivertebrae in a French Bulldog tells you very little on its own, because 93.5% of neurologically normal dogs in the imaging study had them.[2] What matters is what the malformations are doing to the shape of the spine. Ventral hypoplasia — where the underside of the vertebral body fails to develop — was associated with a greater Cobb angle and a higher likelihood of kyphosis, the wedge-shaped hump that can narrow the canal the spinal cord runs through.[3] Ask about the curve and the canal, not the count.
Genetic testing. The DVL2 variant is fixed in the breed,[1] so a test for it in a French Bulldog cannot distinguish one dog from another. The chromosome-12 FGF4 retrogene has an allele frequency of 0.85 in the screened population, so 5% of dogs were wild-type — a test there does discriminate, but only between "very high risk" and "somewhat less high risk."[4] Homozygous dogs were more likely to carry severe disc calcification at two years (OR 3.4, 95% CI 1.03–11.51, P = 0.045), and note how wide that confidence interval is: the lower bound is 1.03. It is a real association, sitting right on the edge of significance in 81 dogs.
Hips. Here is our honest finding, and it is a negative one. We could not verify a published, peer-reviewed prevalence figure for hip dysplasia in French Bulldogs. The percentages that circulate for this breed come from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals' breed statistics table, which we are not going to reproduce here — go and read it at ofa.org — and which is not a prevalence estimate in the epidemiological sense. It is a tally of radiographs that owners and breeders chose to submit. And OFA's own policy page states that "unless the owner has chosen the open database, dysplastic hip grades are closed to public information."[14] A database built from voluntary submissions, where the abnormal results are private by default, will not give you a population rate. It will give you a floor.
For what it is worth, the largest UK primary-care study of the breed lists patellar luxation as the only specific joint disorder among those with significantly increased odds in French Bulldogs; the leaders on that list are airway, skin and eye conditions.[8] That is not proof that Frenchie hips are fine. It is a reason to be sceptical of anyone quoting you a confident number. One more piece of paperwork worth asking about: OFA offers preliminary screening for dogs between 4 and 23 months of age.[14] A preliminary result on a young dog is not a permanent one, and a breeder presenting a preliminary as a final grade is either confused or hoping you are.

What actually helps#
Almost none of this involves buying anything, which is why we are going to spend most of the section on the free half.
Keep him genuinely lean. This is the largest modifiable factor in joint disease and it is free, and it is worth saying plainly that a French Bulldog carries a lot of body mass on a very short frame. It is also the one lever you hold that acts on the spine, the knees and the airway at the same time.
Change how he gets down, not just up. Landings are the repeated impact, not take-offs. A dog that trots up onto the sofa and jumps down forty times a week is taking forty impacts through a spine with hardened discs. Block the jump-down routes, or give him a route he prefers.
Use a harness, never a neck collar. This is the most breed-specific piece of advice on this page, and it comes straight out of the lesion data: cervical disc herniations were 39.8% of French Bulldog herniations in the French series, with C3–C4 the single commonest space at 57.8% of those.[6] Most chondrodystrophic-breed advice concentrates on the lower back. For a Frenchie, the neck is genuinely in play.
Discuss the timing of neutering with your vet, rather than defaulting. A 2025 retrospective review of 2,101 French Bulldog records reported that dogs gonadectomised before 12 months had a higher risk of disc herniation than intact dogs — odds of 1.92 in males, and 9.84 in females, against 2.77 in late-gonadectomised females.[13] Take that carefully: the authors call their own results preliminary, it is retrospective rather than randomised, and a 9.84 odds ratio from record review is the kind of number that shrinks when someone runs the study properly. It is not a reason to leave a dog entire. It is a genuinely good reason to have the conversation about when, which our guide on when to spay or neuter a dog works through from both sides.
Traction indoors. Rubber-backed runners on the two or three routes he actually uses, and nails kept short. Our floor traction guide has the room-by-room version, and it costs less than anything below.
If you are going to buy one thing#
For a French Bulldog the honest answer is that the highest-value purchase is whatever stops the daily jump down off the furniture. Before you spend: try simply blocking sofa access for two weeks and see whether the dog settles. Plenty do, and that is the end of the problem.
When it is not the end of the problem, the constraint for this breed is a specific one. A Frenchie is heavy for his height, wide, and short-legged, which makes a long car ramp geometrically awkward indoors and makes steep plastic steps unappealing to a dog who cannot see his own feet past his chest.

- Rated to 100 lb, and that is the number that disqualifies these for a lot of the dogs this site is about. A 110 lb Labrador or any giant-breed senior is outside the rating, and no amount of foam quality changes it
- The one-year warranty explicitly excludes "wearing or materials or components which may occur after extended use." Foam compression over years — the way foam stairs actually fail — is the excluded case, not the covered one
- The listing contradicts itself on the unit's own weight: a feature bullet says "weighing only 4 pounds" while the listing's dimension field says 8 lb. If you are buying partly because you intend to carry it room to room, that is a two-fold difference nobody has resolved
- Amazon and Snoozer also disagree on the footprint's orientation — Amazon lists 21 in wide × 25 in deep, Snoozer's own page lists 25 in wide × 21 in deep. Measure the gap beside your bed for both shapes before ordering
- Bigger footprint than plastic stairs — needs real floor space

We are recommending it here on a narrower argument than usual: the moment that matters for this breed is the descent, and foam is the only step material on our list that gives when a 25-pound dog lands on it rather than transmitting the impact straight back up. The tradeoffs are real and we would rather you heard them from us. It is expensive for what it is — $95 to $225 depending on size, against $30 for plastic steps that will also work if your dog will use them. It takes up more floor than plastic stairs. And foam compresses over years, so this is not a lifetime purchase. If your dog will happily use $30 plastic steps, buy those instead; the foam premium is only worth paying for the dog who hesitates or lands hard.

Buy it for the mechanism, which is better evidenced than we used to say: in a 2024 strain-gauge trial a front-clip harness reduced pulling force as much as a prong collar did, with none of the prong's baggage. Two honest caveats go with that. PetSafe's own two websites disagree about whether this handles a heavy puller or only light-to-moderate pulling, and the tightening martingale chest strap is the one feature the 2025 review of this equipment tells you to treat with caution. Buy the new listing, not the Amazon Resale one, because used stock is excluded from the warranty.

- The mechanism has a real trial behind it. Johnson and Wynne (PeerJ 2024; 12:e18131, DOI 10.7717/peerj.18131) walked 23 dogs on four rigs with a strain gauge on the leash. A front-connection harness cut pulling impulse significantly against a martingale flat collar (Z = -3.69, p < 0.001) — and was statistically indistinguishable from both a metal prong collar and a Starmark. Cons
- PetSafe contradicts itself about your dog on its own two channels. The Amazon listing for this exact SKU says the harness "safely controls light to moderate pulling." petsafe.com's page for the same SKU says it "stops lunging and pulling" and lists the perfect use as "For heavy pullers." Both were live on 2026-08-14. If you have a genuinely heavy puller, the manufacturer has published both a yes and a no, and we are not going to pick one for you
- The chest strap is a patented martingale — it tightens. That matters, because the same 2025 review that endorses non-tightening front-clip harnesses puts tightening harnesses and martingales in the caution group: "Tightening harnesses, martingale collars, and head collars can pose greater discomfort and should be used with caution" (Cavalli and Protopopova 2025). This harness sits on both sides of that sentence
- The "a Y-front would be kinder to his shoulder" line you have read everywhere is not what the one study to measure it found. Lafuente, Provis and Schmalz (Veterinary Record 2019, DOI 10.1136/vr.104946) filmed nine dogs on a treadmill: every harness reduced shoulder extension against no harness, and the non-restrictive Y-front reduced it MORE than the restrictive type — by 2.6 degrees at walk and 4.4 degrees at trot. Nine dogs on a treadmill is a small study and we will follow better evidence when it appears, but as of today the Y-front advantage for the shoulder is unsupported and points the wrong way
- The warranty is narrower than the listing implies. PetSafe's published terms: one year from delivery, "non-transferable," and it "does not apply to products purchased from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized Internet sites, as well as used, refurbished or 'as-is' products." The 45-day satisfaction return is a petsafe.com return only — for Amazon, their page says "please contact retailer directly"
- Watch which Amazon offer you click. Alongside the $26.99 new listing there was a $22.48 "Amazon Resale" offer, one unit left, on 2026-08-14. Resale is used stock, and used product is named in PetSafe's warranty exclusions
- If your dog eats it, the fix is not free. PetSafe covers chewed nylon as a one-time courtesy replacement and their policy refers to a "nominal chew fee." Their returns page also requires goods be "in original condition and in original packaging" — which a harness you have fitted to a dog is not
- Management, not training. It does not teach loose-leash walking
The harness argument here is not about pulling, which is what this product is designed and marketed for. It is about the C3–C4 number above: a collar puts every correction, every lunge at a squirrel and every sudden stop through the exact region where this breed herniates discs. Any well-fitted harness does that job — a $20 one from the pet shop does it as well as this one, and we would rather you bought that than nothing. What this model adds is four adjustment points (PetSafe's own figure — we previously printed five), which genuinely matters on a barrel-chested dog with no neck to speak of, and front-clip control if he pulls. What it does not add is spinal protection beyond what any harness gives you. One correction from the kinematics literature, against our own earlier framing: we used to count the non-Y-front strap layout as a fit drawback, but the published gait study found the Y-front design restricted shoulder extension MORE than the straight-strap style (2.6° at walk, 4.4° at trot) — so on shoulder mechanics this layout is, if anything, the lighter touch.[18] Neither of those is a reason to keep using a collar.
Where to go next, and the one question to ask a surgeon#

If you are further along and dealing with a dog whose back end is not working properly, start with limping versus weakness — in this breed, that is the distinction that decides which specialist you need.
And if surgery is on the table, there is one question that belongs to this breed and no other on our site.
Brachycephalic dogs carry a materially higher anaesthetic risk, and it lands after the operation rather than during it. In a study matching 223 brachycephalic dogs against 223 non-brachycephalic dogs for procedure and other characteristics, post-anaesthetic complications occurred in 13.9% of the brachycephalic dogs against 3.6% of the others; intra-anaesthetic rates were far closer, and overall perianaesthetic complications were near-identical at 49.8% versus 48.4%.[15] The risk in this breed is concentrated in the recovery period, when the tube comes out and a compromised airway has to do its own work.
That does not make surgery the wrong choice — for a dog losing neurological function, delay is far more dangerous than anaesthesia. It makes the recovery plan the thing to interrogate. Our list of questions to ask a veterinary orthopedic surgeon is where to take that conversation, and for a French Bulldog we would add one to the top: who is watching him after extubation, for how long, and has his airway been assessed before we book this? We are not going to write an airway article here; that is a different specialty and a different page. But it changes the surgical decision, so it belongs in the surgical conversation.
Two more honest notes before you go. Surgical fixation of a symptomatic hemivertebra is real but not routine — a multi-centre series of 12 brachycephalic dogs treated by spinal segmental stabilisation reported chronic complications in 58%, though most were minor and none required revision surgery.[17] And the breed's overall picture is sobering: UK life tables for dogs that died between 2016 and 2020 put French Bulldog life expectancy at birth at 4.53 years (95% CI 4.14–5.01) against 11.23 years for dogs overall. The authors themselves flag that this is partly an artefact — Kennel Club registrations rose from 2,771 in 2011 to 39,266 in 2020, so the population is skewed young and contributes disproportionately many young deaths to the table.[16] The German owner survey put average age at death at 8.3 years, with cancer the leading cause at 47% of deaths.[11] Both numbers are true about the populations they describe. Neither is a prediction about your dog.
What to do this week#
Take the collar off the lead and put a harness on it. That is a ten-minute change and it acts directly on the region where this breed herniates most.
Then watch him get down off the furniture once, deliberately, and decide whether you are going to block that route or give him a better one. Not the way up. The way down.
Then, at the next routine appointment — not a special one — ask for a neurological check alongside the joint check: paw placement, reflexes, and whether he will follow a treat with his head turned to each side. It adds about two minutes. In a breed where lameness is the sign you are least likely to get and spinal cord disease is three times more likely than average, that is the examination that finds things early.
None of that prevents disc disease. The chemistry was decided before you met him. What it does is shorten the delay between the first sign and the appointment, and in this breed, at three and a half years old, on a Tuesday night, the delay is the injury.

- What is the most common joint or bone problem in French Bulldogs?
- Disc disease in the spine, by a very wide margin — and it is not close. In a referral series of 439 French Bulldogs seen for spinal disease, acute intervertebral disc extrusion accounted for 84.3% of all diagnoses (Kerr et al., Veterinary Record 2025). In an earlier series of 343 French Bulldogs seen for any neurological complaint, Hansen type I disc herniation alone was 45.5% of everything (Mayousse et al., BMC Veterinary Research 2017). Patellar luxation is the commonest true limb problem, but it sits a long way behind the spine. If you own this breed and you are going to learn one set of warning signs, learn the spinal ones.
- At what age do French Bulldogs start having back problems?
- Much younger than most owners expect. In the 2025 referral series of 439 French Bulldogs with spinal disease, the median age at presentation was 44 months — three and a half years old. In the earlier French series, median age at a disc herniation was 4.0 years for thoracolumbar and 4.2 years for cervical. The groundwork is laid far earlier still: in Finnish dogs screened at a mean age of 27.4 months, 41% of French Bulldogs already had the most severe grade of disc calcification on radiographs (Reunanen et al., BMC Veterinary Research 2025). This is a disease of young adult dogs, not old ones.
- Do all French Bulldogs with hemivertebrae get sick?
- No, and this is the single most important thing to understand about the finding. When 62 neurologically normal French Bulldogs were imaged, 93.5% had hemivertebrae (Ryan et al., The Veterinary Journal 2017) — in dogs with no neurological signs at all. A follow-up study counted 243 hemivertebrae across 58 neurologically normal French Bulldogs, roughly four malformed vertebrae per dog. Clinically relevant hemivertebra with kyphosis was found in only 2.9% of French Bulldogs in the 2025 referral series, against 16.0% of pugs. So a hemivertebra on an X-ray in this breed is close to a normal finding. Ask your vet what the spinal curve is doing and whether the vertebral canal is narrowed, not simply whether hemivertebrae are present.
- Should I use a harness instead of a collar on a French Bulldog?
- Yes, and the reason is specific to this breed rather than general advice. French Bulldogs get cervical (neck) disc herniations far more often than most chondrodystrophic dogs — 39.8% of disc herniations in the French series were cervical, with C3–C4 accounting for 57.8% of those. A neck collar puts every pull directly through that region. A harness moves the load to the chest. A basic $20–35 harness does this job; the expensive ones buy you handling features, not extra spinal protection.
- Does a French Bulldog need surgery for a disc episode, and does the flat face change the decision?
- Whether surgery is needed is a neurological question for your vet and a specialist, driven by how severe and how fast-moving the signs are. But the flat face genuinely changes the arithmetic of the anaesthetic, and you should raise it out loud. In a matched study of 223 brachycephalic and 223 non-brachycephalic dogs, post-anaesthetic complications occurred in 13.9% of brachycephalic dogs against 3.6% of the others (Gruenheid et al., JAVMA 2018). That is not a reason to refuse surgery. It is a reason to ask who is monitoring recovery, for how long, and whether the airway has been assessed first.
