Rottweiler Joint Problems: What Goes Wrong, and When
Rottweilers carry one of the heaviest orthopedic loads of any breed — elbows, hocks, cruciates, and a bone cancer risk that changes what a limp means. Here is the age timeline.

The Rottweiler is not a hip-dysplasia breed with extras. It is an elbow breed, a hock breed, a cruciate breed, and — separately and more seriously — the breed with the highest recorded odds of osteosarcoma in the UK. That last fact changes how you should read a limp, because in a Rottweiler a young dog's front-leg lameness and an old dog's front-leg lameness are two entirely different problems. This page is the age timeline, the screening numbers, and the one decision where the evidence genuinely conflicts.
What is it about this build?#
Start with the weight, because everything downstream runs off it. Rottweilers under UK primary veterinary care had a median adult bodyweight of 44.9 kg — 48.5 kg for males, 41.5 kg for females — and a median longevity of 9.0 years.[1] That is a lot of dog arriving quickly, on growth plates that are still open, and it is the single mechanical fact that explains most of what follows.
But mass alone would predict a hip breed. The Rottweiler is not primarily that. What distinguishes this dog is where the load lands.
The front end takes it. A standing dog carries more of its weight on the forelimbs than the hind, and in a Rottweiler that front end is carrying a lot. In Swedish Kennel Club screening data, 26.0% of 6,008 Rottweilers had elbow dysplasia of some grade, against 18.0% of 5,994 with hip dysplasia.[2] That is the inversion worth carrying out of this article. Most large-breed owners are watching the hips. In this breed the elbows are the busier joint, and they are harder to see going wrong, because a dog with sore elbows does not limp dramatically — he shortens his stride at the front and looks, to a loving eye, like a dog who has become dignified.
A caveat we would rather state than skate over: we went looking for published Rottweiler-specific gait analysis, force-plate data, or conformation measurements to put numbers on that front-end loading, and we did not find any. The breed's orthopedic literature is about outcomes — what goes wrong, how often — not about how this particular skeleton moves. So the mechanical account above is inference from bodyweight and joint prevalence, and you should read it as that rather than as measured fact.
The hocks are the odd one. Osteochondritis dissecans is the disease where a patch of joint cartilage fails to convert properly to bone during growth, lifts, and either cracks or breaks free. In most large breeds the classic site is the shoulder. In Rottweilers, the classic site is the lateral trochlear ridge of the talus — the hock. The association was established in a 1990 case series of eleven lesions in seven young Rottweilers, which also found that the standard views miss them and a specific oblique projection was the most useful for seeing them.[3]
Be honest about what that citation is: seven dogs, no denominator, no risk estimate. You will find figures online claiming Rottweilers carry something like 206 times the hock OCD risk of mixed breeds, or that they account for 41% of reported cases. We could not trace either number to a source we could read, so we are not printing them as ours. What we can say and defend is that the breed–site association is real, published, and old enough to be routine knowledge among orthopedic surgeons — and that it means a hock is a place to look in this breed when it would be an afterthought in another.
The stifle is not spared either. Among 984 surgically treated dogs across two Scandinavian university hospitals, the Rottweiler was the only one of twelve breeds with a significantly increased risk of cruciate ligament disease, at an odds ratio of 3.96 (95% CI 2.39–6.56) against mixed-breed dogs. The same study put Rottweiler elbow dysplasia at an odds ratio of 5.63 (95% CI 2.62–12.07), though that figure was driven almost entirely by the Norwegian site and the Swedish arm alone was not significant — we would rather show you that split than a clean number that hides it.[4]
A UK study of 1,000 cruciate cases against 500,000 controls found the same thing at population scale, and it contains a comparison worth having if you have owned other large breeds. Six breeds had increased odds of cruciate rupture compared with crossbred dogs, and the Rottweiler was the highest of them at OR 3.66 (95% CI 2.34–5.73; P < 0.001) — 21 of the 1,000 cases against 2,892 of the 500,000 non-cases. In the same model, against the same crossbred comparator, the German Shepherd Dog came out below crossbreds at OR 0.43 (95% CI 0.23–0.81; P = 0.009).[5] Two big, powerful, working breeds; opposite ends of the same table. Being large is not the risk factor. Being this dog is.
What does this breed actually get, in order?#
Ranked by how likely it is that this is your dog's problem, not by how frightening it is.

Two notes on reading that table honestly.
The screening percentages and the primary-care percentages are not the same kind of number and cannot be compared. Screening figures count radiographic findings in dogs whose owners chose to X-ray them — usually breeding stock, usually a healthier and better-bred slice of the breed than average. Primary-care figures count diagnoses a vet wrote down in a year. That is why 18% of screened Swedish Rottweilers had dysplastic hips while only 1.23% of UK Rottweilers had hip dysplasia recorded in their notes.[1][2] Neither is wrong. They are answering different questions, and anyone who quotes one at you as "the Rottweiler hip dysplasia rate" has not understood theirs.
And obesity belongs in an orthopedic table. It is the second commonest thing written in a Rottweiler's notes, it is the largest thing you personally control, and it makes every other row worse.

The bone cancer number, and why it belongs on a joint page#
Osteosarcoma is not a joint disease. It is on this page because in a Rottweiler it presents as one, and mistaking it costs weeks.
The scale of it is not in dispute. In a UK VetCompass study of 905,552 dogs with 331 osteosarcoma cases, the Rottweiler had the highest annual prevalence of any breed at 0.84% (95% CI 0.64–1.07) and a multivariable odds ratio of 26.67 (95% CI 18.57–38.29) against crossbreeds; 61 of the 331 cases in the country that year were Rottweilers.[6] A separate UK case-control study of 1,756 osteosarcoma cases put the Rottweiler top again, at an odds ratio of 13.30 (95% CI 10.55–16.75) against crossbred dogs; Rottweilers were 7.9% of cases and 0.8% of controls.[7] In a US teaching-hospital series, breed period prevalence was 5.3% (51 of 969 Rottweilers), second only to retired racing Greyhounds.[8]
Two details from that last paper are the ones that should change your behaviour. Rottweilers were diagnosed at a mean age of 8.3 years. And Rottweilers and Great Danes were more likely to have the tumour in a forelimb than a hind limb.[8]
Put that beside the breed's median lifespan of 9.0 years and you have the sentence this section exists for: in a Rottweiler, the age at which bone cancer typically arrives lands before the age at which half the breed has died of everything else. Which means an eight-year-old Rottweiler with a new front-leg limp is not an old dog getting stiff. He is a dog in the exact demographic, at the exact site, in the exact year.
We should be clear about the limits of what we just told you. All three of those studies establish relative risk extremely well and none of them tell you what will happen to your individual dog. The UK annual prevalence figure — 0.84% — is the most concrete of them, and it means that in any given year, the great majority of Rottweilers do not get this. The point is not that your dog has cancer. The point is that in this breed the diagnostic threshold for imaging a limp should be lower than the internet's default of "give it two weeks."
When does each thing show up?#
This is the section nobody writes, and it is the most useful thing on the page.

The uncomfortable shape of that table is that the two most consequential windows — the one where dysplasia is decided, and the one where a limp might be cancer — are both windows in which the dog looks fine or looks merely old. That is the whole thesis of this site in one breed: the delay is the injury.
What does the first week of trouble look like in a Rottweiler?#
Generic advice says watch for limping. In this breed, that advice is late.
In the puppy and adolescent. The first sign is rarely a held-up leg. It is a dog who lies down partway through a walk he used to finish, who is oddly slow to get going after a nap and then loosens, or who develops a stiff, choppy front stride that a family reads as "he's just a serious dog." Rottweiler puppies are stoic and heavy, which is a bad combination for early detection: stoic hides it and heavy hastens it. If a forelimb lameness in a Rottweiler under 18 months has been there more than a fortnight, it is osteochondritis dissecans or elbow dysplasia until radiographs say otherwise. Ask for elbow and shoulder views, and if the gait looks wrong behind rather than in front, ask for hocks specifically, because that oblique view is not always part of a standard series.[3]
In the adult. Cruciate disease in a heavy dog often announces itself as a sudden hind-leg lameness after an ordinary turn, improves over a week or two, and then comes back. The improvement is the trap. In the older dog. Rottweilers do not complain. The commonest recorded cause of death in the UK study, after neoplasia at 33.0%, was "inability to stand" at 16.0%[1] — a category that is, read plainly, the end point of musculoskeletal decline. Muscle asymmetry deserves a specific mention here because a black-and-tan dog with a dense coat conceals it visually far longer than a short-coated or light dog. Feel, do not look. Screening: what the paperwork does and does not tell you#
If you are buying a puppy, this is the section that matters, and the short version is that hips alone are not enough for this breed.
Elbows are the ones to insist on. Given that 26.0% of screened Swedish Rottweilers had some elbow dysplasia against 18.0% with hip dysplasia,[2] a breeder who shows you hip scores and shrugs about elbows has skipped the more common problem. Ask for both parents, both joints, in writing.
On the BVA/Kennel Club hip score. In the UK scheme each hip is scored 0–53 and the two are added, so 0 is perfect and 106 is the worst possible. In the Kennel Club's 2021 annual report, covering all Rottweilers scored in the preceding fifteen years, 2,735 dogs had been scored with a mean of 9.6 and a median of 8.0; the five-year figures were a mean of 9.3 and a median of 8.0.[10] Placed against other large breeds in the same table, that is a comparatively good showing:

Two things to take from that. The advice breeders are given is to use dogs scoring below the breed median, so for a Rottweiler the number to hope for on a parent's paperwork is single figures, not simply "better than average across all dogs." And the fact that Rottweilers score better than German Shepherds on hips is exactly why hips are the wrong thing to fixate on in this breed — the risk has moved elsewhere. On OFA. In the United States the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals publishes breed statistics for hips and elbows, and its database is the one most American breeders quote. We are not reproducing its tables — OFA does not permit it — and we should also tell you plainly that when we went to verify a Rottweiler figure for this article on 11 August 2026, the breed statistics on ofa.org were served by a script we could not read, so we have not printed an OFA number here rather than print one from memory. Go to ofa.org and look your breeder's dogs up directly, which is better practice anyway: a certification number you can verify beats a percentage you cannot.
The neutering decision, where the evidence actually conflicts#
Most articles give you one study here. There are two, they were built differently, and pretending they agree would be dishonest.
The joint study. A UC Davis analysis of 854 Rottweilers found that 8% of intact males and 16% of intact females had one or more joint disorders. In males, neutering under six months and at six to eleven months produced 10% and 22% occurrences (combined p < 0.05). In females, spaying under six months produced a 43% occurrence (p < 0.05), and the main disorder driving it was cruciate disease. The authors' suggested guideline was neutering males beyond a year of age and females beyond six months.[11]
Two honesty notes on that paper, since it is the one that gets quoted hardest. It is a retrospective review of a referral teaching hospital's records, which is not a random sample of pet Rottweilers. And its cancer results are reported as a combined category — 16% of intact males and 11% of intact females, not increased by neutering at any age — with the per-cancer breakdown living in an appendix we could not retrieve. So we are not attributing any Rottweiler-specific osteosarcoma percentage to this study, and neither should anyone else.
The bone cancer study. A cohort of 683 Rottweilers followed by owner questionnaire across 71,004 dog-months found bone sarcoma in 12.6% of the cohort. Dogs of either sex gonadectomised before one year of age had approximately a one-in-four lifetime risk of bone sarcoma and were significantly more likely to develop it than intact dogs — relative risk 3.8 (95% CI 1.5–9.2) for males and 3.1 (95% CI 1.1–8.3) for females. There was a highly significant inverse dose-response relationship between how long a dog retained its gonads and its bone sarcoma incidence rate (p = 0.008 males, p = 0.006 females), independent of adult height or body weight.[12]
That is an owner-questionnaire cohort from over twenty years ago, with all the recall and selection problems that implies, and a 12.6% bone sarcoma rate far above any population figure — which tells you the cohort was not representative of Rottweilers generally.
So what do you do with two flawed studies pointing the same way? You notice that they do point the same way. Neither says early is better. One says early spaying multiplies cruciate disease; the other says early gonadectomy of either sex multiplies bone sarcoma, in proportion to how early. Against that sits everything neutering is for — pyometra, unwanted litters, and in the same Davis dataset, a finding that runs the other way on behaviour. Take both papers to your vet, name them, and make the decision for your individual dog and household. What actually helps a Rottweiler#
Lean, first, and it is not close. The strongest evidence in canine orthopedics is a lifetime feeding trial in 48 Labrador Retrievers, littermate-paired, one of each pair fed 25% less for life. Radiographic hip osteoarthritis appeared at a median age of 6 years in the control-fed dogs and 12 years in the restricted-fed dogs.[13] Say the honest thing about that: those were Labradors, in a controlled colony, and no equivalent trial has been run in Rottweilers. But the mechanism is not breed-specific, obesity is already the second most recorded disorder in this breed,[1] and six years of delay is a number no supplement has ever come close to.
For a Rottweiler specifically, that means resisting the pressure to grow him fast. A heavy adolescent is not a well-fed adolescent; he is a dog putting adult loads through open growth plates during precisely the months in which osteochondrosis lesions form.[9] Ask your vet to body-condition-score him at every visit in the first two years and write the number down.
Then surface. A 45 kg dog that slips does not recover the way a spaniel does — the splay is bigger, the leverage on the stifle is bigger, and a cruciate in this breed is already the highest-odds cruciate in the country.[5] Rubber-backed runners along the routes he actually walks, nails kept short, and the fur between the pads trimmed will cost less than one set of radiographs. Then activity type. Steady, frequent, and flat beats occasional and explosive. Repeated hard turns, jumping out of cars, and stop-start ball chasing are the movements that convert a marginal stifle into a ruptured one. If he is already stiff, how much walking is right for an arthritic dog has the actual arithmetic rather than "keep him moving."

And products, honestly: this page recommends none. Not because there is nothing that helps a Rottweiler, but because nothing in the shops is different because your dog is a Rottweiler, and that is the only thing this page is for. In this breed that is not a slogan; it is arithmetic about an 8.3-year mean age at osteosarcoma diagnosis against a 9.0-year median lifespan.[1][8]
What to do this week#
If your Rottweiler is under two: book a body condition score, and if there is any lameness at all that has lasted more than a fortnight, ask for elbow views by name.
If he is between three and seven: put your hands on both thighs at the same height tonight and feel for a difference, and write down what you find with today's date.
If he is over seven and has a new limp in a front leg, do not give it two weeks. Ring your vet, say the words "Rottweiler," "forelimb," and "his age," and ask what the threshold for radiographs is. If the answer is a trial of pain relief first, it is reasonable to ask how long that trial runs before imaging happens anyway.
And if surgery is on the table at any age, the questions to ask an orthopedic surgeon is the list to take in with you. For an older dog specifically, whether he is too old for surgery is a better question than it sounds, and the answer is more often yes than owners expect.
This breed gives you less warning than most, because it complains less than most. That is not a reason to be frightened of owning one. It is a reason to move a week earlier than instinct says.

Several figures circulate for this breed that we could not trace to a source we were able to read: a claim that Rottweilers carry roughly 206 times the hock osteochondritis risk of mixed breeds, that they account for 41% of reported hock cases or 90% of lateral trochlear ridge lesions, and that 5–12% of Rottweilers develop osteosarcoma. We could not verify any of them at the primary source on 11 August 2026, so they do not appear above. Rottweiler-specific figures from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals are likewise absent: OFA does not permit reproduction of its statistical tables, and its breed statistics were not retrievable to us on that date.

- What joint problems are Rottweilers most prone to?
- Elbows first, by the numbers. In Swedish Kennel Club screening of 6,008 Rottweilers, 26.0% had some degree of elbow dysplasia, against 18.0% with hip dysplasia among 5,994 screened. Cranial cruciate ligament disease is the third, and in UK primary-care data the Rottweiler had the highest odds of any breed. Osteochondritis dissecans is the fourth, and it is the one that is unusual in this breed rather than merely common: Rottweilers are the breed classically associated with the lesion appearing in the hock rather than the shoulder. Underneath all of it sits osteoarthritis, which was recorded in 4.69% of Rottweilers under UK primary veterinary care.
- At what age do Rottweiler joint problems start?
- Earlier than most owners expect. Osteochondritis dissecans is a growth-plate disease with a median age at diagnosis under a year in Swedish insurance data — 0.73 years for hock lesions. Elbow and hip dysplasia are formed during that same first year even when the limp does not appear until two or three. Cruciate disease clusters in middle age. Osteosarcoma comes latest, at a mean of 8.3 years in Rottweilers in one US teaching-hospital series, which is worth sitting with, because the median lifespan of the breed in UK primary care is 9.0 years.
- Should I wait to neuter my Rottweiler to protect his joints?
- This is the one decision where the evidence genuinely conflicts, and you should know that before you choose. In a 854-dog Rottweiler sample at UC Davis, 16% of intact females had one or more joint disorders, rising to 43% in females spayed before six months, and the authors suggested spaying beyond six months for females and beyond a year for males. But an earlier cohort of 683 Rottweilers found dogs gonadectomised before one year had roughly a one-in-four lifetime risk of bone sarcoma, with a dose-response relationship to how long the dog kept its gonads. Both point the same direction — later rather than earlier — but they are different studies, different populations, and neither is a randomised trial. Take both papers to your vet rather than a conclusion.
- Is a limp in a young Rottweiler an emergency?
- Not an emergency, but not a wait-and-see either. A persistent forelimb lameness in a large-breed dog under 18 months is osteochondritis dissecans or elbow dysplasia until radiographs say otherwise, and both are more treatable before the cartilage flap has done its secondary damage. Book the appointment and ask specifically for elbow and shoulder views. The urgent version is different: a lame limb in a middle-aged or older Rottweiler with a focal, painful spot on the bone itself needs radiographs promptly, because that is how osteosarcoma presents.
- Do joint supplements help a Rottweiler?
- Less than keeping him lean does, and this page recommends no product at all. The best-evidenced intervention in canine orthopedics is a lifetime of restricted feeding: in 48 Labradors fed 25% less than their littermates for life, the median age at which hip osteoarthritis first showed on radiographs was 12 years against 6 years in the control-fed group. That was Labradors, not Rottweilers, and no equivalent trial exists in this breed. But it is free, it is available to you tonight, and nothing in a bottle has evidence approaching it.
